This course offers a comprehensive exploration of expressive portrait drawing, grounded in both traditional academic practices and contemporary artistic expression. Whether you're starting your artistic journey or looking to expand your creative voice, this course will reaffirm foundational figurative drawing skills while providing the space and freedom to master your own expressive mark-making.We will cover: <ul><li>Light Effect &amp; Shadow</li><li>Form Modeling</li><li>Structural Analysis of the head and facial features</li><li>Line Confidence &amp; Composition</li></ul> Learn to tune into your body, trust yourself, and discover the beauty of your unrepeatable line. LOCATION: This class will be held at the UTILITY WORKS makerspace in downtown Lansdowne, PA. Materials Needed:- Red, White and Blue Chalk pencils- 2 pieces of Strathmore Artagain Drawing Paper - 19" x 25", Moonstone- Strathmore 400 Series Recycled Toned Sketch Pad - 11" x 14", 24 Sheets,Cool Gray- Fixative spray- Blending tools (tortillons, blending stumps, or soft cloth)- Erasers (kneaded and vinyl)- Exacto knife and fine grit sandpaper for sharpeningOptional: Various inks and White paper for toning Who is this course designed for? This course is designed for artists of any experience level:- Beginners: Learn the fundamentals of charcoal medium, visual mark-making, and creating compelling figure drawings without a focus on anatomical detail.- Advanced Artists: Push boundaries by shifting from tight, controlled drawing to a more expressive and loose style Course Objectives: 1. Study Traditional and Contemporary Masterworks: Analyze works from both academic and contemporary traditions to understand material handling and expressive techniques.2. Learn Foundational Drawing Techniques: Master the basics of tonal scales, shading, and form turning through practical exercises.3. Develop Personal Artistic Voice: Experiment with visual marks, line quality, and texture, informed by traditional studies and personal expression. Agenda

- Overview of contemporary and historical masterworks in the academic tradition
- Discussion on material handling and the use of colored chalk
- Introduction to tonal scales and the concept of "turning form"
- Exercise: Shading a sphere to understand light and shadow



 Week 1: Introduction to Masterworks and Material Handling

 Review Tonal scale and Sphere
- Copy simple Bargue plates to develop control over the medium while studying light and shadow
- Live demonstration focusing on these foundational techniques


Week 2: Foundational Techniques and Bargue Plates

- In-depth exploration of the rhythms and structures of the head 
- Techniques for capturing expressive qualities in portraiture
- Drilling the loomis method, memorizing the rhythms and proportions of a conceptual head from different angles


Week 3: Rhythms of the Head with Loomis method

-Demo schematic for facial features
-Drill facial features from reference photos and master drawings in order to internalize structure
-Maintains notes on schematics of head and features for reference in final portrait


Week 4:  Structural Breakdown of Facial features

 Techniques for finding and expressing one's inner voice and body rhythm in drawing
- Transitioning from detailed, tight drawing to more expressive, loose styles with emphasis on gesture
- Create short-pose sketches emphasizing basic structure of head and structural landmarks, dynamism from a live model 


Week 5: Short-pose Drawing the Chalk portrait from life

- Demo of Long-Pose Chalk Portrait with expressive marks
- Completion of a final expressive portrait drawing from life 
- Group critique and discussion
- Reflection on the creative journey and future directions in art


Week 6: Long Pose Chalk Drawing of Portrait Model
