Celebrating Juneteenth

The Centre for Social Innovation is a coworking space, community, and launchpad for people who are changing the world, with three locations in Toronto and a location in New York City. We provide our members with the tools they need to accelerate their success and amplify their impact. Together, we’re building a movement of nonprofits, for-profits, entrepreneurs, artists and activists working across sectors to create a better world.

This program will be a performance and open dialogue. There will be performances by Malik Work and Rebecca Kelly G.

Our intention is to use the CSI platform to uplift all voices and support the breadth of learning, action, and healing that this moment calls for. A reminder that this event is an intentional space meant exclusively for Black People. If this is not how you identify, we respectfully ask that you excuse yourself from attending this particular session. This program will be a performance and open dialogue. There will be performances by <a href="http://www.malikwork.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Malik Work</a> and <a href="https://www.rebeccakellyg.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rebecca Kelly G</a>. Malik is debuting his piece &quot;400.&quot; This piece is the prologue to an epic long form verse, a griotic myth that narrates the kidnapping of members of a West African community and their ensuing enslavement. This will be followed by a soundscape performance by Rebecca Kelly G called &quot;The People Can Fly&quot; about release from enslavement. Performances will be followed by conversation on &quot;400&quot; as well as healing and celebrating Black life.************************************************************************************Create For Your Symbols: A Black Healing Space is the first workshop in a series of workshops curated by <a href="https://www.rebeccakellyg.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rebecca KellyG</a> and hosted by <a href="https://nyc.socialinnovation.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Centre of Social Innovation</a> entitled, Room To Breathe.This series is designed to make intentional space centering Black people and giving space to gather, release, strategize, grieve and create with one another. Throughout June and early July, we will gather online around a different modalities ranging from poetry and movement to roundtable discussion and advocacy training. *************************************************************************************Malik Work<a href="http://www.malikwork.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Malik Work</a>, the NYC based actor-teacher-writer-emcee is a founding member of the groundbreaking jazz/hip hop conglomerate: The Real Live Show. He has written and starred in a one man show entitled Verses At Work, for which he was nominated for Best Solo Performance at the 2017 AUDELCO Awards. He also wrote, starred in, and executive produced a film version of Verses @ Work that was selected by the Hip Hop Film Festival, and won the International Spotlight Award at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival. His recent television credits include Broad City on Comedy Central and Blacklist: Redemption on NBC. He has provided voice-over for national network commercials, scripted television, radio, internet, a museum opening in spring 2020, and has written for HBO. He teaches acting, creative writing, Shakespeare, theater arts, hip hop and hip hop theater, locally and internationally. His show Verses At Work has most recently been featured at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC, as well as in South Africa for the 2019 National Arts Festival in Makhanda, formerly known as Grahamstown. She partners with creative communities to see and heal internalized oppression, celebrate generative discomfort, and move culture and practices toward equity. Building on this foundation, her sessions and immersive experiences are designed to speak to various learning styles, incorporate artistic expression, and offer deliberate actions for change. She is a strong advocate for the transformative power of self-love in actualizing social revolution and actively serving the collective with integrity.
