Catwalk Coding Morning Session

Reeny is sixteen years old with a passion for fashion and an interest in computer science!In 2013, Reeny began creating Illumi-cize, a series of fashion accessories that progressively light up as the user exercises, with the intent to use the power of fashion to combat childhood obesity. She and Illumi-cize have earned many awards and titles since then, including being named one of 2013’s America’s Top Ten Young Scientists, meeting President Obama at the White House Science Fair, and, for the previous two years, being National Runner-up for the NCWIT Aspirations in Computer Award.At all of Reeny’s science fairs, young girls always wanted Reeny to help them make an outfit like hers, but Reeny never could due to cost constraints. Thanks to the NCWIT AspireIT award and accompanying grant, Reeny is now able to use the power of fashion yet again, but this time for a different purpose close to her heart--encouraging girls to consider careers in STEM and promoting girl power through science and technology!

<P>“Catwalk Coding” is an instructional course designed to attract girls to fields in STEM! During the week-long, all-girls camp, we will construct a scaled-down version of “Illumi-cize,” an invention of illuminating fashion accessories presented to President Obama at the White House Science Fair. By constructing their own illuminating accessory, girls will learn both electrical and coding skills from women in STEM fields. The camp will culminate on Friday with a blinking runway fashion show followed by discussions with women in tech about STEM opportunities.<SPAN CLASS="apple-converted-space"> </SPAN>Girls will get the chance to embrace their inner engineer while satisfying their inner fashionista!</P>
