Direct support professionals, or DSPs, require special certification to administer most medications and treatments.

Category 1 Certification allows personnel to administer prescribed medications and perform health-related activities as outlined in the DODD's curriculum.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • This is an in-person 2-day event. Each day will last from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm,.
  • A copy of the course curriculum will be available to borrow during the length of the program. Electronic copies can be found here.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing.
  • There will be a 30-minute lunch break. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch due to time constraints but are welcome to leave the building.
  • Class will be canceled if there are less than 4 registrants. Tickets will be refunded in this case.
  • Refunds/credits will only be issued if you contact ONINursing@ohionetworkforinnovation.com or call 740-507-5384 at least 2 business days before the start of the class. No-call, no-shows will not be refunded.

Course Goal

To teach unlicensed DD personnel how to administer oral and topical medications and perform the 13 health-related activities (HRAs) specified by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities.

To be eligible to participate in the course and be eligible for certification, participants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be employed by a certified DD Agency or be a certified DODD Independent Provider.
  2. Be at least 18 years old.
  3. Have obtained a High School Diploma or GED.
  4. Have the ability to read, write,a and understand English at a level that is sufficient to pass the course.
  5. Meets the criteria for background and registry checks in compliance with OAC 5123:2-2-02.
  6. The application is submitted by a certified DD Agency or certified DODD Independent Provider (IP’s will submit application along with High School Diploma/GED documentation), which will be verified by the RN Trainer.

1. If the class needs to be canceled at the last minute by the instructor, you will be contacted based on the contact information provided on your application. A notification will be sent via email regarding class make-up dates.

2. If you need to cancel or change your reservation, please contact us at 740-507-5384. You cannot send someone else in another individual's place. Any changes or cancellations must be requested to the instructor 2 business days before the start of the class.

3. Refunds will not be provided to those who do not attend the class without following the above policy.

4. ONI reserves the right to deny entrance to late participants.
