Palisades Visitor Center

The WorkWe will be creating loose rock structures to halt erosion, increase water absorption, and support plant growth in drainages around Caseco Spring in the Santa Catalina Mountains. These low-tech structures can make huge differences and are a great tool for transforming landscapes. We&#x27;ll be getting dirty, bending, lifting, and digging with tools provided by SIA. Covid PrecautionsTo keep our volunteers and staff safe, we’re taking these precautions: <ul><li>If you have signs/symptoms of Covid, or if you or anyone in your household has had a recent exposure, please stay home.</li><li>Monitoring the case numbers and variant severity so we can make good decisions about proper precautions. If you’d like to bring kids, please contact us first. </li><li>Choose how to get there: You can either meet us there, caravan with us from SIA’s office, or carpool in SIA vehicles (masking will be based on case numbers and discussion with other carpoolers). </li><li>We&#x27;ll be camping, and each household should bring their own food, camping gear, and cooking gear. </li><li>Working outside, of course! </li><li>We will stay safely spaced out while working. </li><li>We’ll have a thermometer available in case anyone starts feeling off. </li></ul>What to Expect/BringWe will be camping for the duration of the weekend. Bring your own meals for the weekend — a minimum of two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners, with snacks. <ul><li>SIA will provide potable water, and folks are welcome to bring their own as well, as there is no water onsite.</li><li>Be prepared to unplug — there is limited or no cellphone or internet service where we&#x27;ll be camping and working. </li><li>B﻿ring camping gear: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc. We have extra camping gear available to borrow. Please contact our staff listed below if you would like to use some of our equipment.</li><li>Bring work clothes, work gloves, and appropriate close-toed boots/shoes that you don&#x27;t mind getting dirty and potentially torn. </li><li>B﻿ring sun protection: sunscreen, long-sleeves, hat, etc.</li><li>Bring a refillable water bottle and a daypack for snacks and gear.</li></ul>We will be building rock structures which will entail carrying, moving, and placing rocks of various sizes. Some heavy lifting will be required, though no one will be asked to lift more than they feel capable of. Be prepared for getting dirty as we will also be digging as part of the building process. LocationW﻿e&#x27;ll be sleeping near Lizard Rock, in a closed area we have permission to camp in. We will be driving each morning from Lizard Rock to Sollers Cabin, where we will hike a short distance (&lt;1 mile) to the Caseco Spring site. Please note there will be on-site restroom facilities at the camping area, but not the work area.Getting ThereThe Lizard Rock camping area is along a dirt road, but is accessible by two-wheel drive and low-clearance vehicles. There are no left turns allowed into the Lizard Rock camping area, so we have been asked to drive up to the Palisades Visitor Center, and then U-turn to head back down to Lizard Rock.Option 1Meet at the SIA office at 3127 N Cherry Ave. at 3 p.m. on Friday to caravan or carpool to the Palisades Visitor Center. Option 2If you would like to meet us at the camping area, we will have the gate unlocked by 4 p.m. However, you must drive up the hill to the Palisades Visitor Center and then U-turn to head back down to Lizard Rock.From Tucson: (21 miles) Take the Catalina Highway off Tanque Verde Road in Tucson. There are no left turns into the camping area, so you must go higher up the mountain and turn around to get to the camping area. https://goo.gl/maps/Y4PA1BLwwR7kkgTv9Trip Logistics<ul><li>Friday, 3 p.m. — meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the Palisades Visitor Center</li><li>Friday, 4 p.m. — if you would like to meet SIA at camping area, the gate will be unlocked around 4 p.m. Please drive up to Palisades and then U-turn to be able to make a right turn into the camping area. The gate will be &quot;dummy locked&quot; (appear locked, but actually be unlocked) while we&#x27;re in the camping area.</li><li>Saturday, 7 a.m. (or earlier)— be prepared to head out and start heading to Caseco Spring. We will work throughout the day with breaks for meals. </li><li>Sunday, 7 a.m. (or earlier)— get started on another day of building erosion-control structures. We will finish up in the afternoon and then head back to Tucson. </li><li>Sunday, 6 p.m. — we will be back to our Tucson office by 6 p.m. </li></ul>Unfortunately, pets are not allowed on this trip.
