Resistance is Futile: OSU vs. the Counter Culture

Peace, love and flower power did not meet with instant acceptance on OSU's sprawling campus in the mid 60's. The strongest opposition came not from uptight administrators, but many OSU students themselves. But in the end, the counter culture won out, leaving Middle America changed forever. Bill Shkurti discusses how and why it became cool to tune in, turn on and drop out.

The author will take questions from the audience.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

William "Bill" Shkurti was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He entered Ohio State University as a freshman in the fall of 1964 and graduated in 1968 with a BA degree in economics. He then served as an army artillery officer in West Germany, Vietnam and Fort Meade, Maryland.

After completing his enlistment, Bill returned to Ohio State in 1972 to earn a Master's Degree. He then served in a number of positions for the State of Ohio, including state budget director. Bill returned to Ohio State to be its chief financial officer, retiring in 2010 after 20 years as the Vice President for Business and Finance. He currently serves as an adjunct professor in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs.

Bill's first book, Soldiering on in a Dying War published in 2011, recalls the challenges of the drawdown from the Vietnam War. His most recent book, published in the fall of 2016, hits closer to home. The Ohio State University in the Sixties: The Unraveling of the Old Order uses contemporary news stories, long overlooked archival materials and first-person interviews to explore how tensions built up over years, why they converged when they did and how they forever changed the university.
