7 p.m. | Author Talk
Resistance is Futile: OSU vs. the Counter Culture

Peace, love and flower power did not meet with instant acceptance on OSU's sprawling campus in the mid 60's. The strongest opposition came not from uptight administrators, but many OSU students themselves. But in the end, the counter culture won out, leaving Middle America changed forever. Bill Shkurti discusses how and why it became cool to tune in, turn on and drop out.

7:30 p.m. | Audience Q&A
The author will take questions from the audience.

8:00 p.m. | Book Signing
A selection of the author’s books will be available for purchase or you can bring your copy to have signed.

William "Bill" Shkurti was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He entered Ohio State University as a freshman in the fall of 1964 and graduated in 1968 with a BA degree in economics. He then served as an army artillery officer in West Germany, Vietnam and Fort Meade, Maryland.

After completing his enlistment, Bill returned to Ohio State in 1972 to earn a Master's Degree. He then served in a number of positions for the State of Ohio, including state budget director. Bill returned to Ohio State to be its chief financial officer, retiring in 2010 after 20 years as the Vice President for Business and Finance. He currently serves as an adjunct professor in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs.

Bill's first book, Soldiering on in a Dying War published in 2011, recalls the challenges of the drawdown from the Vietnam War. His most recent book, published in the fall of 2016, hits closer to home. The Ohio State University in the Sixties: The Unraveling of the Old Order uses contemporary news stories, long overlooked archival materials and first-person interviews to explore how tensions built up over years, why they converged when they did and how they forever changed the university.

What time do the doors open? Seating begins at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium. The program will begin promptly at 7 p.m.

Where should I park and how much will it cost? Free parking in Main Library’s garage will be offered during all Author Talks. Garage capacity is 375 vehicles and its entrance on Library Park North is accessible off of Grant Avenue.

If the garage is full, metered street parking and surface lots surround Main Library. Fees may vary.

Are there assigned seats? No. Seating is general admission. Reserved handicapped- accessible seats will be available.

Do I have to bring my ticket to the event? It is preferred so that we know you pre-registered. If the event is sold out, guests with proof of ticket (mobile or printed) will be seated prior to those who did not pre-register.

What happens if the event is sold out? Join the waitlist and you will be notified when seats become available based on your placement on the list.

What is the cancellation policy? This is a free event. If you cannot attend after you have registered, please cancel your reservation as soon as possible to make room for other guests who may be on the waitlist.

Can I record the program? We encourage you to take photos and share them using the hashtag #CarnegieAuthorSeries, but recording is not permitted.

Will the author's books be available for checkout or purchase? A selection of the author's books will be for sale in the Library Store prior to the program and in the Reading Room at the conclusion of the event. Proceeds of the book sale benefit the Friends of the Library.

Main Library will have a special display of the author's books and similar titles ready for checkout with your library card.
