About this event

Carbon Markets, Nature, Rights and Climate Justice

HOSTED BY The Climate School, Columbia University, WE ACT For Environmental Justice, NAMATI, Grassroots Justice Network, Columbia World Projects

MODERATED BY Sheila Foster, Climate School Visiting Professor _____________________________________________________________________________________

On behalf of the Columbia University Climate School, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Namati, the Grassroots Justice Network, and Columbia World Projects, you are invited to participate in an intimate and closed-session Climate Week roundtable alongside public sector, community, industry, NGO's, the funding community, and academic leadership.

This dialogue aims to discuss shared learning and realities of policy and practice for communities living on land and sea assets valuable in the context of carbon- and biodiversity-credit markets.

Now is the time to ensure community and local jurisdictional risks and realities are included in the design and implementation of complex projects and market rules. A historic and rapid transformation of these markets is underway and expected to increase 15-fold by 2030 and 100-fold by 2050. Meanwhile, rulemaking continues around Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement, third-party standards evolve, and national governments react with new policies and projects. This discussion will inform our collective practices as well as ongoing global and national policy negotiations, including at the upcoming COP28.
