Welcome to the 2nd Annual Black History Month Symposium: Capturing Landscape Legacy, hosted by the Black Landscape Architects Network.

<h1>BlackLAN is thrilled to invite you to join us for our 2nd Annual Black History Month Symposium </h1>This year&#x27;s symposium theme Capturing Landscape Legacy invites us all to question how we capture landscapes and narratives that are tied to our known/unknown histories, everyday happenings, and envisioned futures. We will engage these reflections with a discussion between our guest speakers and you the audience. We will end the evening with an at-home after party presented by <a href="https://www.blacktechnomatters.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">BLACK TECHNO MATTERS</a> that you don&#x27;t want to miss!<h3>Capturing Landscape Legacy will be moderated by Mel Gross. JAMIL FATTI is an artist and registered landscape architect currently pursuing a masters in fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design. His recent work explores themes of belonging, love &amp; longing, and impermanence, informed by literature, philosophy, and personal experience as a conceptual framework. He uses photography to reconstitute fragments from the external world into scenes that reflect subjective inner realities.<a href="https://www.jamilfatti.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.jamilfatti.com/</a>

ABRA LEE is an international speaker, writer, and founder of<a href="https://www.instagram.com/conquerthesoil/?hl=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Conquer The Soil</a> a community which explores the history, folklore, and art of horticulture. She has spent a whole lotta time in the dirt as a municipal arborist and airport landscape manager. Her essays have been featured in publications including The New York Times and Wildflower Magazine. Lee is a graduate of Auburn University College of Agriculture and an alumna of the Longwood Gardens Society of Fellows, a global network of public horticulture professionals.

MERCEDES WARD holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from Penn State University. She is a licensed Landscape Architect and works for NYC Parks. She’s been project lead for several parks, playgrounds, water play areas, courts, fields, and memorials totaling $27.1 million. She has also assisted on large, award-winning projects in Brooklyn NY. Her work often involves collaboration with various city agencies, elected officials, private LA firms, engineering firms, and local community groups. 
Mercedes was a member ASLA National’s Diversity Summit. She also served as a juror for the 2017 National ASLA Student Awards. She was a member of the ASLA-NY chapter's executive board, and served as the Education committee chair. Mercedes has participated in various events back at Penn State, at York University in Toronto, and at City College in NYC including speaking engagements, guest critiques, portfolio reviews.
