CAPS Poverty Simulation 

For over 35 years, Albion Fellows Bacon Center has been strategically working toward preventing domestic and sexual violence in our community and offering services to empower victims. Our services assess barriers to safety and self-sufficiency as well as the emotional and psychological needs of victims. Our programs use the Trauma Informed Care framework, focusing on the overall well-being of each individual.We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, a United Way partner agency and work closely with law enforcement and local prosecutors to provide assistance to those who have been impacted by domestic and sexual violence. Albion’s services are free and confidential.

The simulation involves participants who take on the roles of members of up to 26 families, all facing a variety of challenging, but typical, circumstances. To start the simulation exercise, each family member will receive a card explaining their unique circumstances. It is then the families’ task to provide food, shelter, and other basic necessities by accessing various community resources during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.”
The Community Action Poverty Simulation  (CAPS) breaks down stereotypes by allowing participants to step into real life situations of others. Poverty is a risk factor for many social issues, including domestic and sexual violence, substance abuse, school attendance, child mortality, health and more. 
The CAPS Poverty Simulation is a tool that helps participants rethink the challenges that millions of low-income individuals must face each and every day. More importantly, this tool helps people identify areas of change that can directly impact the effects of poverty on individuals, families and communities.  
Please plan to attend the entire 3 hour program. This time frame includes an introduction and briefing by the facilitator, the simulation exercise, and a guided debriefing in which participants and volunteers share their observations and insights from the activity.
