About this event

In correlation with launching the new Arts Capital grant program, the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) is pleased to present a four-part professional development series: Capital Project Strategies for the Arts.

Capital projects are often essential to increasing accessibility, expanding audiences, providing a safe and healthy environment for artists and audiences, and ensuring that a facility will be open to the public for years to come. However, the complexity, cost, and time commitment required to complete a capital project can be an overwhelming prospect for many staff and boards.

In Capital Project Strategies for the Arts Session 4: “Ask a Construction Expert”, Rayya Newman of Triple Line Studios, Khalid Malik of GEMM COMM, and Marek Skovajsa of Metropolitan Engineering will hold an interactive workshop where arts organizations are invited to bring questions to the table and get real-time advice from experts in the design and construction field. Listen in for construction experts sharing lessons learned from working with several arts nonprofits over the years.

The Capital Project Strategies for the Arts series will offer guidance on:

Understanding the characteristics and scope of capital projects and how size and complexity correlate to budget and timeline.

Learning how to assess a building or arts facility and organize multiple needs into projects or phases of work aligned with organizational priorities and capacity.

Understanding the difference between “soft” and “hard” costs in capital projects and how to think about both when fundraising for and managing your capital project.

Recognizing when a project may benefit from outside expertise and having a sense of who or how to approach someone from an outside sector to assist you in reaching your goals.

Who Should Attend?

Capital Project Strategies for the Arts is designed for nonprofit administrators and employees working in the arts and culture sector. Organizations that receive operational support and are thinking about or at the beginning of a capital project or that have applied or are planning to apply for MSAC’s Arts Capital grant might find the series especially helpful.

Attendees must register for each session individually and may choose to attend the sessions of interest or that fit their schedule. It is not required to attend all sessions. Registration is available through MSAC’s Eventbrite page.

A recording of each presentation will be posted to MSAC’s YouTube page following the event, and available for asynchronous watching. Questions-and-answer portions will not be recorded in order to foster a more open dialogue among the participants.

Benefits of Attending

Capital Project Strategies for the Arts workshop presenters are owner-representatives, project managers, architects, engineers, and contractors actively working in the built environment. Each presenter will offer advice and best practices based on their experience working with arts and culture nonprofits in Maryland.

By attending the series, you will meet and learn from a group of subject matter experts with cross-sector experience and a stated interest in helping nonprofit and mission-driven clients accomplish successful capital projects.

In addition, MSAC hopes that through this series, we can encourage network-building between arts and culture sector employees who can share and exchange their expertise and resources from past and current experience managing capital projects for their organization.
