Event description

Description

Capacity is a student exhibition for the Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studio at California College of the Arts: Space, Message and Experience.

What is your capacity? Could it be considered the ability to change, to transform oneself continuously, or is it more of a repeated endeavor? Do you consider yourself resilient? There could be a space, a non-conductive region of interactive capabilities where charges and forces are multiplied and capacities change, alter, expand and contract, infinitely. The liminal space is a constant space of inquiry, re-assessment, and flow. “Liberty is a practice”, states Michel Foucault, and perhaps through practice we hold on to the ability to cross the threshold of awareness. This threshold is the state and being of consciousness. Through the senses we are allowed to access the power to discover, and this act of discovering is the state of being alive. We live closer to a certain undiscovered country when we imagine capacity as a potential state, the potential for us to exist in the constant flux of the city. This city filled with light and darkness, desired outcomes, realigned meaning, and practiced opportunities. Capacity.

This studio class gives students the opportunity to explore the intersection between space, communication, and the design of experience. By focusing on contemporary techniques of installation art, environmental graphics, architecture, and interaction design the studio will explore how experience and its manipulation – is a means to shape meaning.

All projects encouraged a sense of collaboration between disciplines by engaging hybridization between, analog and digital, stasis and motion, three- and four dimensions, and passive and active participation.

At the door we will be asking for a sliding scale donation $5-$20 per person.

Music provided by the Tasty DJ crew.

Donations will go to the SF Main Food Bank.

Sponsored by California College of the Arts, Code & Canvas, PennDesign, Tasty, and Tornado Tower.
