HOSTING 101 is designed for poets, performers, and curators ready to deepen their craft beyond the mic. This workshop dives into the essentials of hosting with a focus on poetry events but applicable to any live gathering.
A great poet doesn’t always translate into a great host. This workshop dives into the essentials of hosting memorable events. Co-host Deuce will cover engaging audiences, maintaining event flow, and cultivating a welcoming atmosphere for performers and attendees alike. Whether you’re a poet ready to transition into hosting, or a curator seeking skilled emcees who elevate your event, this workshop reveals what makes a host not just functional but unforgettable.
Participants will learn how to:
1. Create a welcoming atmosphere that sets the tone for the night.
2. Manage event flow with clarity and confidence.
3. Keep audiences engaged and connected.
4. Navigate unexpected challenges with ease.

DeuceThePoet is a multifaceted artist and creative force—a spoken word artist, songwriter, pianist, emcee, and one half of the dynamic DrumBo production team alongside Silk on Da Track. A proud New Orleans native, DeuceThePoet has represented his city on national stages, competing in renowned events like HBO's Brave New Voices and the Southern Fried Poetry Slam, as a member of both the New Orleans Youth Slam team and the adult New Orleans Slam team. He is currently a member of Slam New Orleans’ 2025 competition team, continuing to showcase his city’s poetic excellence.
In addition to his success as a performer, Deuce has been a cornerstone of New Orleans' vibrant arts scene, hosting enduring events such as "Speak Sundays," "Neutral Grounds Open Mic," and the "Underground Mocha Room."
Recently, he has expanded his artistic reach by producing tracks for artists and short films while also mentoring young performers. Drawing from the inspiration and guidance he once received, Deuce is now committed to fostering the next generation of creative talent in his community.
Sweetie Magee is a multi-hyphenate artist from New Orleans, LA. A writer, slam poet, vocalist, spoken word artist, and event curator, she transforms the raw and unfiltered narratives of her life into powerful art. She is a national performer, currently ranked among the top 25 Women Poets in the World, and serves as a 2024–2025 Literary & Performing Arts Resident at Tulane University’s A Studio in the Woods.
Emerging as a bold voice that challenges the idea of perfection, Sweetie inspires audiences to embrace authenticity. Through her artistry, she uplifts, empowers, and leaves a lasting mark on the literary and performance landscape.
