Campfires: Chellberg Farmhouse (Indiana Dunes National Park)

We'll start this Campfires program at the Chellberg Farmhouse near the town of Porter in the Indiana Dunes National Park. At the Chellberg Farmhouse, we'll learn the story of the Swedish-American family that settled the farm in the late 1800s. We'll then walk to the Bailly Homestead, established by French-Canadian fur trader Joseph Bailly in the 1830s. The homestead, which is designated as a National Historic Landmark, features a main house with late-19th-century architectural detail, rustic log and brick structures and an unusual family cemetery. As we travel between the two sites, we'll explore the surrounding environment unique to Indiana Dunes National Park.

The trek will be co-led by a Hoosier humanities scholar as well as a ranger from the park. In addition to exploring the two historic sites, we'll stop to read short works by nature writers. The trek will conclude with a shared discussion around a campfire.

• A limited number of free tickets are available based on need; please contact Sam Opsahl at sopsahl@indianahumanities.org.
• Depending on the weather, some trails may be wet, so wear shoes that can handle the mud.
• Please bring a reuseable water bottle to take with you on the outing.
• We'll send a final confirmation two days before the event with driving and parking instructions and any other updates.
• In case of inclement weather, Indiana Humanities will cancel the event and alert you via email at least two hours prior to the event start time. If the event is canceled, we'll offer a refund or a ticket to another Campfires event of your choice.
• This event is designed for ages 12 and older.
• Refunds are not available after 72 hours in advance (unless Indiana Humanities cancels the event).
