CampCon

Youth and Teen Recreation Services (YTRS) is a group of friendly recreation professionals who work in city or town municipalities, child development centers, and other youth and teen related agencies. YTRS members meet monthly to network, exchange ideas,  identify trends in the field, share resources, and collaborate on annual YTRS projects such as the YAC Attack, YAC Social, Campcon, and more! The ultimate goal is to serve the youth and teen Bay Area community. Membership is free and is open to all youth and teen recreation professionals in the counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Francisco, also known as District 4. CampCon is an all-day summer staff conference that supplements staff training through sessions and presentations. Educational sessions will be led by experienced summer camp staff, recreation professionals, and representatives from outside organizations.Date: Saturday, June 10, 2023Location: San Mateo Martin Luther King Community Center - 725 Monte Diablo Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401Time: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.Cost: $10 per person (Please include all staff and advisors who will be attending.)

Learn about developmental disabilities and best practices for inclusion in a camp setting.

Session 1 & 2: Inclusion and Disability Awareness 

Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is at the forefront of all recreational planning these days. Come learn what it means to look at programs and activities through a J.E.D.I. lens and gain helpful tips to last your through summer, and beyond. Leave this presentation with examples of ways to make your camps more inclusive and welcoming for all!

Session 1 & 2: JEDI in Camp

You are a complex individual shaped by your interests, experiences, and personality. Learn how to use everything that makes you unique as a launch pad to get out of your comfort zone.

Session 1: Role Modeling and Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Almost every city has teen volunteers who are integral in helping run the camp machine. Learn best practices for working with your volunteers, keeping them engaged, and turning them into future staff.

Session 1: Working with Volunteers

Learn how to provide entertainment with limited to no supplies, be creative, and think outside the box. Nothing ever goes as planned at camp, so when something is missing or breaks, you need to be ready to think on our feet!

Session 1: Work With What You GOT!

Let’s talk: responding to emails & text messaging, navigating difficult conversations, interview 101, and other tips & tricks. This session will help to set yourself up for success, not only to level up at your job, but to build habits for your every day life

Session 1: Professionalism and Communication 

Staff will get an overview of what is required for a fun, safe, and successful field trip, including field trip etiquette, being proactive instead of reactive, and problem-solving real-life scenarios.

Session 2: Field Trip Tips and Tricks

This session aims to provide summer camp staff with practical tips and strategies for living and working together harmoniously during the summer season. Participants will learn effective communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, and ways to create a positive and supportive team culture to ensure a successful and enjoyable summer camp experience for all.

Session 2: Surviving Summer Without Getting on Each Other's Nerves

You aren’t a teacher, parent, or coach – so how do you manage behavior effectively as a camp counselor?! Learn behavior management strategies to wrangle your campers but leave them loving camp!

Session 2: Behavioral Management

This session is centered on planning and executing crafts for a variety of ages. Participants will also learn how to adapt your projects with limited supplies and time, because we all know it can’t always go 100% according to plan!

Session 2: Leading Arts & Crafts the Right Way
