Overview

2-day in-person meditation workshop with Tergar Guide Scott Anderson, October 25-26, 2025 in Eugene, Oregon

About the Joy of Living Level 1

Meditation enables us to transform all experiences, even difficult emotions and painful thoughts, into sources of joy. The modern world has become fascinated with the practice of meditation. With all the hype and glossy images on magazine covers, it would be easy to think that meditation is about sitting in the right posture, using a special technique, or forcing the mind to be calm or relaxed all the time. But the real power of meditation isn’t in the method. It’s in shifting our perspective.

The key to this shift in perspective is awareness. In this weekend workshop, we will learn to transform our experience by exploring sensations, thoughts, emotions, and even awareness itself as supports for meditation.

This program offers step-by-step instructions that will benefit those new to meditation and inspire those who have an existing practice. The schedule for this workshop includes video teachings by Mingyur Rinpoche, presentations by Tergar Guide Scott Anderson, as well as guided meditations and discussion. It is suitable for people of all faiths, as well as both beginning and experienced meditators.

When: Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26; 9am -5:30pm PST (check-in starts at 8:30am)

Cost: Sponsorship fee - $180; Regular fee - $135; Reduced fee - $90 (for individuals with limited income (such as seniors and students) or for those who have previously completed a JOL1 workshop). Please note that no one will be turned away for lack of funds. If the fees listed are challenging, please contact us at eugene@tergar.org and we will be happy to offer a further discount.

Meals: Attendees may either bring their own lunches or purchase food from the many nearby restaurants and cafes. There are comfortable seating areas available both inside and outside the hotel where everyone can enjoy their meals.

Lodging (optional): The retreat hotel is now fully booked. Local hotel rates are higher than usual due to the UO football game. We encourage out-of-town guests to reserve accomodations asap and to consider sharing home rentals or staying a bit outside of the city to avoid the rate hikes.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Refunds up to 1 day before the event. Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance so we may have an accurate attendee list.

Meet the Guide: Scott Anderson has practiced yoga and meditation since he was a teenager. Since meeting Mingyur Rinpoche in 2010, he has dedicated himself to the practice and dissemination of Rinpoche’s teachings as one of the founding leaders of Tergar Madison. Scott has a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research at the UW-Madison’s Human Performance Lab explores the interaction of meditation, athletics, and physical recovery, and his teaching activities are at the intersection of physical activity and meditation.
