<H2>ABOUT THIS TRAINING</H2>
<HR>
<P>Educators consistently report that student misbehavior remains one of the most stressful aspects of their job.  These concerning behaviors include tantrums, meltdowns, disrespectful language, defiance, non-compliance, and "having an attitude."  It is hard to know how best to help the students in these moments, particularly when the behavior is so disruptive to the learning environment and presents safety concerns.  The Calm, Compassionate Teaching Approach helps educators identify the most common reasons for student misbehavior and provides practical strategies for addressing the problematic behavior in the moment, as well as helping students build core life skills so that the behavior does not reoccur.</P>

<P><STRONG>More about Dr. Epstein:</STRONG> For the past 25 years, Dr. Epstein has worked with families, educators, and mental health professionals supporting children with a variety of social, emotional, and behavioral struggles.   For 17 years, Dr. Epstein worked for the Cherry Creek School District in Denver, Colorado, during which time he helped develop the district’s intensive treatment program for students with significant behavioral challenges. He also spent several years as a classroom teacher, teaching social-emotional skills to students in a general education setting before becoming a district behavior coordinator, helping schools implement school-wide behavior programming, including Bully-Proofing Your School, Positive Behavior Supports, and Collaborative Problem Solving. Most recently, Dr. Epstein was a Clinical Instructor in Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School as well as the Director of Training and Implementation for Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital, overseeing the implementation of Collaborative Problem Solving in schools, hospitals, residential treatment programs, and juvenile justice programs. Dr. Epstein is the co-owner of South Shore Psychological Services, where he continues to support families, schools, and treatment programs in their work with challenging youth. He also helped found the non-profit organization Creating Caring Communities, where he served as Board President. </P>

<P><STRONG>More about Kirk Downing:</STRONG> Kirk relocated to Massachusetts in 2007 to become the principal of Chickering School in Dover, Massachusetts. In 2010 he became principal of Brown School in Natick, Massachusetts where he developed a Response to Intervention (RtI) model that has proven to be highly successful. Kirk has presented his RtI design to principals around Massachusetts and he has been a featured speaker for the EDCO principal preparation program as well as a guest instructor in other courses on RtI best practices. In 2015 he became a certified practitioner in Collaborative Problem Solving through Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital. He used his knowledge of RtI and CPS to develop a whole school problem solving practice that addressed the academic, social, and emotional needs of his students. Kirk was a board Member of the Massachusetts Elementary School Principal Association for seven years and he served as president of the association in 2016-2017. As president, he helped negotiate and problem solve the consolidation of the two Massachusetts principal associations into one association. Kirk is also a certified mentor for the National Association for Elementary School Principals. In his role as a mentor, he has worked with first year principals on developing highly effective systems and practices focused on helping students strengthen skills to solve problems.</P>

<P><STRONG>LUNCH: </STRONG>Lunch will be on your own from 12:00pm-1:00pm. There are many wonderful places within a few minutes of the school. We will happily provide recommendations. You're also welcome to hang out and have lunch in the room.</P>
