Callery Pear Buyback/Recall Event - Topeka, KS

Back by popular demand!! Cut down an invasive Callery pear tree, get an ecologically beneficial tree in exchange for FREE!

Our friends at Evergy financially supported this event! All trees are 3-gallon RPM nursery stock, sourced from Forrest Keeling nursery in Elsberry, MO.

To spread awareness about how the invasive Callery (Bradford, Cleveland Select, Chanticleer, Capital) pear tree (Pyrus calleryana) causes harm to our economy and the environment, Evergy, Deep Roots, and our partners are hosting our third Callery Pear Buy-back in the Kansas City area and Northeast Kansas.

Here's how to participate:

1. Cut down a Callery pear tree on your property and take a photo, with a person in it - for scale. Be sure to treat the cut stump with herbicide to prevent resprouts from the base.
2. Complete your registration on this site.
3. Show up between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm on 04/27/24 to pick up your free tree. Show the photo to Deep Roots staff, volunteers, or partners as you check in & select your free tree!

The offer is limited to one native tree per household.

When you register, you will be reserved ONE native tree. Available varieties include Serviceberry, American Plum, Kentucky Coffeetree, Bur/Mossycup Oak, American Hornbeam, Red Chokeberry, Black Cherry, a Swamp White Oak hybrid, Sassafrass, and Washington Hawthorn.

Tree availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations for specific trees.

Participants are invited to pick up their trees during the three-hour window above. No holds or deliveries will be available.
