Hackathon: Natural Disaster Preparedness and Relief code challenge

Hosted by: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Rensselaer Center for Open Source; in partnership with IBM, the UN Human Rights Office, and the International Network of the American Red Cross.

Ever dreamed of changing the lives of 29 million people or capturing $98.5 billion of value in only 24 hours?

Now's your chance to answer the call with IBM, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Rensselaer Center for Open Source. Call for Code is taking over Rensselaer East Campus Athletic Village for 24 hours of hacking from Saturday, September 15th to Saturday, September 16th.

On average, every day natural disasters will directly impact 80,000 people, costing the global economy more than $270 million. What if technology could help improve these figures?

That’s exactly what Call for Code is setting out to do. It asks developers to work out how to use AI, Blockchain, Cloud, Data, and IoT technologies most effectively to improve communities’ disaster preparedness and resiliency.

This is a competitive challenge, but unlike any other hackathon, the winners will be working with The American Red Cross and IBM’s Corporate Service Corps to deploy the solution in 2019. Participants will also be able to interact with IBM recruiters, network with campus peers, and build their technical resume.

Not a developer? Not a problem! Every techie needs a business person, marketer, or designer to help think through how to best deploy the solution into the field.
