WEBINAR SUMMARY
In Chapter 1 of the book Latinx/e in Social Work, Volume II, the author Erica P. Sandoval, LCSW, discusses the intergenerational traumas she experienced. These traumas stem from factors such as financial insecurity, immigration challenges, microaggressions, oppressive practices, and the experience of being a parentified child in a native Spanish-speaking family.
This workshop aims to delve into the impact of intergenerational traumas on Latinx/e families and communities, provide strategies for addressing these traumas within a social work framework, and emphasize the importance of cultural humility and sensitivity when working with Latinx/e individuals. Using the chapter as a case study, we will explore the intersectionality of different forms of oppression and marginalization that Latinx/e individuals face in social work practice and discuss ways to promote resilience and empowerment in the midst of these challenges.
