CACOPHONY

Five bands take over BIMA for an evening of experimental and avant-garde music. Seattle luminary Lori Goldston (Nirvana, Earth, David Byrne, Cat Power), is joined by experimental acts Spawn, Style King of the Week, percussion and movement artists Casey Adams and Hannah Rice, and progressive jazz act Mission Drift for what promises to be a mind-altering night of performances.

Lori Goldston

Classically trained and rigorously de-trained, possessor of a restless, semi-feral spirit, Lori Goldston is a cellist, composer, improviser, producer, writer, and teacher from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist, amplified or acoustic, is full, textured, committed, and original. A relentless inquirer, her work drifts freely across borders that separate genre, discipline, time, and geography.

Current and former collaborators and/or bosses include Earth, Nirvana, Mirah, Jessika Kenney, Ilan Volkov, Eyvind Kang, Stuart Dempster, David Byrne, Terry Riley, Jherek Bischoff, Malcom Goldstein, Steve Von Till, Lonnie Holley, Cat Power, Ellen Fullman, Maya Dunietz, Mik Quantius, Embryo, O Paon, Tara Jane O’Neil, Natacha Atlas, Broken Water, Ed Pias, Christian Rizzo and Sophie Laly, Threnody Ensemble, Cynthia Hopkins, 33 Fainting Spells, Vanessa Renwick, Mark Mitchell, Lynn Shelton, and many more.

Her work has been commissioned by and/or performed at the Kennedy Center, Sydney Festival, Cineteca Nacional de México, Tectonics Festival, Frye Art Museum, Time Based Art Festival (TBA), WNYC, The New Foundation, Paris Fashion Week, Northwest Film Forum, On the Boards, Seattle International Film Festival, Seattle Jewish Film Festival, Bumbershoot, Crossing Border Festival, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Joe’s Pub, the Stone, University of Chicago, and venues large and small throughout North America, Mexico, Australia, and Europe.

Casey Adams & Hannah Rice

Hannah Rice and Casey Adams perform live using movement and sound. They are aesthetically driven by contrast: soft/hard, silent/caustic, visible/invisible, wrapped/unbound, still/erratic. Their site-specific work is heavily grounded in spatial resonance and connecting with candid environmental elements. The heart of their work researches whether the body moves sound or sound moves the body. Their work has been shown around Seattle in DIY spaces such as The Cherry Pit, The Woodland Theater, 18th & Union as a part of Spring Shot 2024, and The Shed as part of the 2024 season of Being Mode. However, their preference is to utilize the myriad of unlikely nooks and crannies: parks, basements, attics, and spaces of reclamation.

Spawn

Spawn is an eclectic collection of personalities that results in a unique experience unlike any other. The combination of synths (Calder Bischoff), drums (Sam Sabol), and vocals/bass (Bodhi Zick), creates a sound that has been described as heavy, playful, free, and undeniably avant-garde. The unpredictable trio transforms any venue into an immersive environment filled with noises that bend our expectations of music, sound, and performance alike, taking cues from free jazz, harsh noise, and hardcore. No one knows what the future holds for these young folks, except for the fact that every time they're in the same room with their instruments, magic is born.

Spawn is set to release their first LP (Produced by Jherek Bischoff) this Summer with a tour in conjunction.

Style King of the Week

Seattle's Style King of the Week is two childhood best friends, reunited after years of living on opposite coasts. They use live drums, synth bass, and manipulated cassette tapes to split the difference between the meticulous reassembling of childhood memories and exuberant, messy, forward-looking creation.

Mission Drift

Mission Drift is a fusion/jazz quintet from the Puget Sound region who bring their extensive experience and compositional skills to bear as they play all-original pieces.

Bandleader Kurt Bischoff was raised in Sacramento, California, where he performed in numerous rock and jazz groups, the Sacramento Symphony and the Camellia City Orchestra. He later attended the University of California, Davis where he majored in music composition and electronic music, studying under Stanley Lunetta, Larry Austin, and John Cage. After college, he performed with the avant-garde music ensemble Amra Arma (with which he performed at the International Carnival of Experimental Sound in London) and the progressive rock group Opus Fluke. After moving to the Northwest, he performed with numerous jazz groups before forming the band Mission Drift.

Guitarist Pat McInnis grew up on Bainbridge Island where he studied with Robin Kutz for many years, and played with Bill Sheehan, Floyd Standifer, Buddy Catlett, and Koruram around Seattle and with Mike Uhler and Mike Boydo in Los Angeles.

Joe Rice is a jazz pianist and composer originally from Bremerton, Washington. He studied jazz theory and improvisation with Mark Lewis as a teen, then honed his skills under Randy Porter and Dan Balmer at Lewis and Clark College. When he’s not gigging with Malo Castro’s Latin outfit WEPA or fusion group Mission Drift, he teaches social studies at Bainbridge High School.

Wayne Swanson is a saxophonist originally from Buffalo, NY. He began his saxophone studies under Buffalo jazz greats Carol McLaughlin and Dick Griffo. He studied sax performance at the University of Buffalo under the classical saxophonist and composer Edward Yadzinski. He later studied jazz improvisation at the New School in New York and composition with Roy Nathanson of the Jazz Passengers. Wayne was a member of the nine-piece soul jazz group Gumshoe and was a founding member of the Afro-Latin street band The 12/8 Path Band and the improvisational ensemble Radio Darkness. Since moving to the Seattle area, he has played with the Tacoma-based jazz quartet Taxi Driver. He currently plays the sax and wind synth with Mission Drift.

Since retiring from the Seattle Symphony, bassist Jon Green has remained musically active. In the past year, Jon has performed concerts and videos for Music of Remembrance, played in the orchestra for the Eagles and Andrea Bocelli at the Climate Pledge Arena, and played a series of jazz quartet concerts in Hood River; Jon also played a few of folkie bar gigs, a house Concert to benefit Concerts in the Barn, the Schubert Trout quintet at Concerts in the Barn in Quilcene, and learned Brazilian Choro tunes for a workshop at Centrum in Port Townsend.
