About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Is it time you tamed that savage bonsai that's been growing like a weed?

This is a BYOB (bring your own bonsai) class. Bring a Dandy Farmer bonsai or one that you've been growing, and learn how to properly trim, prune, and shape your tree with wire. This class is for anyone with a bonsai they currently grow that needs a trimming and re-styling. Please bring only one large bonsai, or two small bonsai.

Learn why it is important to prune and shape, what cuts to make, which branches should get wired, and how to wire. Create a vision for how you want your tree to look in the future. This is a great time to ask for advice on repotting and determine if that's necessary, too.

This class is for beginners to advanced intermediate.

Classes limited to 4 students for one-on-one instruction.

Materials Provided: wire, fertilizer, necessary tools. Other materials on site available for purchase.

About the instructors:

Matthew Puntigam lived and worked in Tokyo for 7 years learning bonsai techniques and garden skills while apprenticing at a garden design and bonsai shop. He opened Dandy Farmer in 2016 to bring the art of bonsai to the NYC community.

*Reach out first if you are bringing one of your own bonsai and it is very old or large!

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring anything to the workshop?

Yes, a bonsai. You can purchase one on site as well, but this is recommended for people who have already had a bonsai for at least a year, preferably one that is overgrown and needs a good trimming.

What's the refund policy?

Sorry, but there are no refunds within 7 days of the event, due to a limited number of spots in the workshop and the preparation involved in making it happen.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Send an email to: hello@dandyfarmer.com

What's accessibility like?

There are several stairs leading up to the shop, but we can assist anyone if necessary.

Best way to get there? Is there parking?

The closest train lines are the F train at York St station, B,Q,R trains at Dekalb Ave station, and G train at Clinton-Washington Ave station. They are all about a 20 min. walk. If driving, there is usually parking a block away along Park Ave. under the BQE overpass. Parking is free.

Organized by

Welcome to our Bonsai community! We are a team of bonsai enthusiasts who believe that what makes a bonsai truly special is the care we give it. Through our classes and workshops, we aim to share our knowledge and teach you the skills needed to maintain a healthy bonsai. Our courses cover a range of topics including repotting, pruning, styling techniques, soil structure, wiring, and pest control. Within a relaxed atmosphere at our tree-filled studio, we encourage you to challenge yourself and take the first step in getting to know your bonsai. Don't worry, we'll be there to guide you through the sometimes scary process of cutting your bonsai. Your bonsai will thank you for it!
