About this event

Join us as we learn more about what the Janesville Wastewater Utility does for us and the environment.

  • How does the Wastewater plant manage over 16 million gallons of water per day?
  • What’s its role in protecting the rivers and lakes in the area?
  • Why is Phosphorus removal so important?
  • What else should we be thinking about?

Joe Zakovec, Superintendent of the City of Janesville’s Wastewater Utility, will provide a guided tour of the plant. Joe has a Bachelor of Science degree in Water Resources from UW-Stevens Point and has been with the City of Janesville since 1990. He leads the 1970’s era plant in its mission to ensure that environmental resources, economic well-being, and future needs of the Citizens of Janesville and Wisconsin are protected.

We'll also hear from Jamie Karns, Executive Director of the Leadership Development Academy of Rock County.

The Leadership Development Academy was founded in 2003 when a handful of senior leaders from the Janesville area recognized a need for a leadership pipeline focused on the community to make Rock County a better place to work, live, and play. Through 20 years, the curriculum has changed, but the focus remains the same, create an opportunity for emerging leaders to dive into the community, bring awareness to needs, and create a network for these individuals to get involved and find their passion.

Executive Director and facilitator, Jamie Karns, came on board a year and a half ago. With a background in educational leadership and non-profit work, her goal is to empower the next generation of servant leaders in our community. Jamie's job is to cultivate in LDA participants a desire to make a positive change and investment in Rock County. This journey starts with the Leadership Development Academy. It begins as a 9-month commitment, but becomes a lifelong adventure!
