Learn how to write better bots with Python! We'll look at several specific, popular industry tools, and also do a deep dive into the core Python mechanics useful not just in writing but also managing the bots we create.

<h2>Summary</h2><p> I'll write a bot that can help us automate the management of a Discord channel, inviting users, adding roles, moderating channels and permissions, updating channel settings, and, of course, interacting with user messages.</p><p>And, time permitting, I'll see if I can hook our bot up to a large language model like GPT4!</p><h2>A﻿bstract</h2><p>In this session, I'll show you how to get started writing bots and automations for the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discord" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Discord VoIP and instant messaging platform</a>.</p><p>Discord is an extremely popular platform for organizing open source communities, and our bots will look at automating common community organizing tasks. I'll walk you through implementing some basic functionality on top of the Discord REST API and leave you with a starting point to extend this code with your own features and functionality!</p><h3>Goals</h3><p>My goals for you in this session are to write a bot that:</p><ul><li>can invite or remove users, as well as update user roles</li><li>can see messages from users</li><li>can respond to these users as part of an ongoing conversation</li><li>can integrate those responses into a conversation to implement custom behaviours (e.g., scheduled messages)</li></ul><h3>Audience</h3><p>To get the most out of this session, you should have some familiarity with the basics of writing code in Python, and you should have familiarity with using REST APIs, working with JSON, and some exposure to libraries like asyncio and httpx.</p><h3>Agenda</h3><p>Our seminar agenda is as follows:</p><ul><li><strong>9:00 AM Overview &amp; Setup:</strong> How do I register a bot? What references, guides, and libraries exist? What are the limitations of the API?</li><li><strong>9:15 AM The API:</strong> What are the common endpoints and JSON payloads I will work with? How do I debug my bot?</li><li><strong>9:30 AM Basic Functionality: </strong>How do I perform simple starting actions like change channel settings like its title or pin messages?</li><li><strong>9:45 AM Advanced Functionality:</strong> How do I perform interactive actions? How do I respond to messages as part of an ongoing conversation (and connect this functionality to other APIs such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or GPT4)?</li></ul>

<h2>Presenter:<em> James Powell</em></h2><p><strong>James Powell</strong> is the founder and lead instructor at Don't Use This Code. A professional Python programmer and enthusiast, James got his start with the language by building reporting and analysis systems for proprietary trading offices; now, he uses his experience  as a consultant for those building data engineering and scientific computing platforms for a wide range of clients using cutting-edge open source tools like Python, pandas, and React.</p><p>He also currently serves as a Board Director of NumFOCUS, the 501(c)3 non-profit that supports all the major tools in the Python data analysis ecosystem (i.e., pandas, numpy, jupyter, matplotlib). At NumFOCUS, he helps build global open source communities for data scientists, data engineers, and business analysts. He helps NumFOCUS run the PyData conference series and has sat on speaker selection and organizing committees for 18 conferences. James is also a prolific speaker: since 2013, he has given over seventy conference talks at over fifty Python events worldwide.</p>
