Bruce Helander - Collage Workshop
This participatory workshop is an introduction to the delight of utilizing the collage discipline with renowned artist, Bruce Helander.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Saturday, June 6, 2026 | 10:00am to 3:00pm | $95 Per Person (Limited Seating) | Lunch: Bring Your Own (There will be a 30 minute break for lunch)
This participatory workshop is an introduction to the delight of utilizing the collage discipline, which was invented by Braque and Picasso 100 years ago. Students receive individual attention from the instructor on techniques to utilize and enhance their artistic expression and will be instructed on preparing and creating a unique paper collage, from choosing the paper to scissors/cutting technique to the specific glue and gluing guidelines as the handmade composition progresses to a final work of art. No previous artistic experience needed. All materials are supplied. The class also offers a brief overview of the history of collage and how it is still an important creative category in making contemporary art.

ABOUT BRUCE HELANDER
The class is led by Bruce Helander, who is the former Provost of the Rhode Island School of Design, a former White House Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and a member of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, as well as a former Board Member and current Educational Services Advisory Committee member of the Center for Creative Education, and a contributor to The New Yorker. He received a BFA and MFA in painting and studied at Yale and Harvard. He is a past recipient of the South Florida Cultural Consortium’s award for Professional Achievement in the Arts. His work is represented in over fifty permanent public collections including the Guggenheim, Whitney, and Metropolitan Museums. His collage work has appeared regularly in The New Yorker magazine, among others. He was featured in the documentary “Master of Glass: The Art of Dale Chihuly,” which aired on the Smithsonian Channel. The former director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston said in Gold Coast magazine that “If there was a Pulitzer Prize for collage, Helander would surely win it.” He is currently developing a pressed flower collage portrait show that will open at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden in November.
