Pranayama is an ancient breath technique that originates from yogic practices in India. It involves controlling your breath in different styles and lengths. It has more recently gained popularity in the western world because of the many health benefits that come from a pranayama practice.
It can help energize the body and mind, improve alertness and concentration, reduce stress, may benefit those with tremor, improve memory and cognitive functions, help with sleeping disorders, provide mental-emotional stability and build confidence and improve quality of life.
Workshop Outline:
1. Research evidence on the beneficial effects of yoga in Parkinson’s disease (Kalpana): 5 min + 5 min Q&A
2. Background on pranayama yoga (breathing yoga) (Nishita): 15 min + 5 min for Q&A
3. Guided practice pranayama yoga (Nishita): 45 min
4. Mingling with participants and Q&A: 15 min

Nishita is stopping by PRO during her visit from India . We are excited to meet her in person - she has been teaching this class for PRO from India for the past 3 years. Kalpana has been studying Parkinson’s disease biology to help develop therapeutics for more than 20 years. She is an advisor to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research and other companies developing medicines for Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
