Valerian the BreathSmith, known as Val, is an artist educator with over twenty years of teaching experience in the arts. As a breathwork facilitator, she is dedicated to sharing the transformative potential of breathwork with communities. With a background in fine arts and education, along with a passion for clowning and improv, Val is deeply committed to combining breathwork with arts activities to inspire positive change.

Scientific research supports the effectiveness of breathwork in various areas, including lowering blood pressure, boosting immunity, managing pain, and improving lung capacity. Moreover, it has been shown to promote better sleep and overall well-being. Engaging in breathwork not only benefits ourselves but also extends to others, as our breath connects us with the collective. By cultivating mindfulness of our breath, we deepen our self-awareness, which in turn enhances our relationships with others. It fosters kindness, strengthens our convictions, and empowers us to make decisions with clarity and determination. Ultimately, breathwork is a powerful practice that offers both personal and interpersonal transformation

Contraindications.

Breathwork is a powerful modality which comes with contraindications. Asthma, untreated high or low blood pressure, recent surgery or injury, thyroid conditions, diabetes, a history of seizures or epilepsy, aneurisms, heart conditions, visual problems such as a detached retina or glaucoma. Also, early or delicate pregnancy Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD or psychiatric conditions. If you are under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol, then this breathwork is not suitable for you.

However, any of these contraindications don’t necessarily mean that you can’t do breathwork, but rather that you need your physician approval to do the conscious connected mouth breathing. You can still do a modified breath where you breathe through the nose. You are still most welcome in the space.
