Breakthrough 2019

Founded in 2009, Filmshop is a non-profit collective of independent filmmakers and media producers committed to developing new work through peer support and collaboration. Chapters in New York, New Orleans, and Los Angeles meet weekly to workshop projects, offer constructive critique, and incubate new ideas. Filmshop also hosts public screenings to celebrate the work of our over 250 active members and to share their art with the local community.

Filmshop’s Breakthrough Series showcases a curated selection of our members&#x27; films in an intimate setting with festival programmers, distributors, film critics and executive producers. Facilitating discussions centered around development and distribution, Breakthrough provides a forum for filmmakers to explore the next stages of their careers. Featured projects range from works-in-progress to fully-produced narrative and documentary shorts, features, and series and feature screenplays. The projects are selected by a panel of jurors, who are all industry professionals and active members of the film community. This year’s jurors include Caitlin Mae Burke (Tribeca Institute), Natalie Erazo (BAM Film), and film critics Alison Bailes and Tayler Montague.After each project is presented in each block, there will be a panel discussion with the filmmakers, an industry Luminary and one of our jurors. This year we are happy to feature Marshall Curry (Street Fight) as our Documentary Luminary , Rockne O&#x27;Bannon as our Screenplay Luminary and Madeleine Olnek (Wild Nights with Emily) as our Narrative Luminary. This year, we are happy to include a Pitchfest for all attendees to participate in, as well as a dedicated lounge for event goers to mingle with filmmakers and industry guests.
