About this event

Writers' room positions are highly coveted and sought after by Emersonians, but there isn't one clear path to break in. Learn how three Emerson alumni in positions ranging from support staff to showrunner/producer got their break and have successfully navigated their careers. Moderated by Shana Lloyd, writer/actor/filmmaker, and Emerson LA faculty member.

This in-person event is hosted by Emerson College Los Angeles.

Moderator:

Shana Lloyd is a (recovering) actor, (sometimes) filmmaker, and (mostly) writer hailing from suburban Maryland. She studied acting in New York at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. While in NYC, she worked off Broadway with many theaters, such as La Mama and NYTW. Shana recently got her feet wet as a director--co-directing and producing a music video. As an actor, she has shared the stage with such greats as Ed Asner and Isabella Hofmann. Shana established Crisis Management Productions in May 2011, as a vehicle to produce more female-driven socially relevant content. Their debut film was the short, "Crisis". She also has a few TV projects of her own in development, as well as with longtime collaborator and writing partner, Alison. They just sold a project to Hallmark that will air late 2023.

Shana has also written and voiced some video spots for LIVEKINDLY. She’s also an adjunct faculty member in the Screenwriting departments of AFI and Emerson. True story: many years ago, Shana was chased down the street by all five feet of Sally Struthers, in which Ms. Struthers told her she “had it” after watching her in a staged reading. This is still one of Shana’s favorite LA moments, right after being checked out by Colin Farrell in two separate Starbucks a few months apart – also true! She’s still kicking herself for blowing both encounters with Colin.

Panelists:

Hailey Chavez '15 is a film/TV writer and producer from Los Angeles. She is currently writing on the third season of the Apple+ show, ACAPULCO. She got her start working as an assistant on CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND and writing a short film "ARE WE GOOD PARENTS?" which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival. She has written for shows such as SUPERSTORE, GROWN-ISH, DIARY OF A FUTURE PRESIDENT, and more recently, UNSTABLE (coming soon to Netflix). She has also written two unannounced features for Disney+, which she can't talk about because she doesn't want to get sued by Bob Iger.

Carlos Foglia '03 has written and produced for Netflix, Amazon, Paramount+, Peacock, HBO, and the CW to name a few. Previous shows include: DAN BROWN'S THE LOST SYMBOL, WOLF PACK, ÆON FLUX, LORE, THE EXORCIST, TWO SENTENCE HORROR STORIES, and he was recently an Executive Producer and Co-Creator along with Steven Soderbergh and Don Cheadle on HBO's "THE OTHER HAMILTON." Currently he is a Co-Executive Producer for a major AMAZON series as well as EP and creator for iHeart's CONSUMED - coming out Fall of 2023. Dominican-Argentinian, he's a proud Bostonian that is still trying to figure out LA traffic.

Stefanie Mandel '17 started her career in the mailroom at WME. There, was introduced to Showrunner's Eddy Kitsis + Adam Horowitz who she worked for over the next 3.5 years. During that time, she won ELA's Pitch Fest in partnership with Final Draft (2017), rose the ranks from Executive Assistant on ONCE UPON A TIME (ABC) and AMAZING STORIES (Amblin & Apple), to eventually becoming the Writer's Assistant for Josh Gad (UNTITLED BEAUTY & THE BEAST PREQUEL) where she was offered her first staff writing position on the Disney+ series. Stefanie is passionate about stories that are darkly comedic, characters who are a little fucked up, and anything penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Currently, she's the showrunner's assistant to Courtney Lilly at ABC.
