The Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated invites you to join them on Saturday, May 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM for the Annual Breakfast for M'Lady Scholarship event. The chapter is pleased to announce that Corey Minor Smith - Attorney, Advocate, Author and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, will be the esteemed guest speaker and will deliver an inspiring address that will be the highlight of the event. Entertainment will be provided by the one & only Sax B!
Meet our speaker:
Corey Minor Smith, a recipient of the 2024 Secretary’s Mission Support Excellence Award and a graduate of the Harvard Business School's 2023 Women of Color Executive Leadership Program, truly embodies Rolling Out magazine’s description of her as a “legendary lawyer, renowned attorney, noted mental health advocate, prominent media fixture, and New York Times celebrated author.”
The New York Times highlighted the remarkable journey of Corey Minor Smith, describing her as “a fascinating woman who moved 21 times and attended 14 different schools before graduating high school, [has a loved one living with schizophrenia], became a mother her senior year of college, and eventually went to law school and became a successful attorney.” These experiences, along with her training as a facilitator for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), have fueled her dedication to mental health advocacy. With a significant national presence, Minor Smith has appeared on platforms like the nationally syndicated radio show The Breakfast Club and has been featured in Forbes and Rolling Out magazines. As an esteemed author, she contributed to the Audible Original We’ve Got Answers and wrote a compelling memoir titled #Driven (pronounced Hashtag Driven), with a foreword by motivational speaker Les Brown. The New York Times praised #Driven as “searing and moving,” it was also highlighted as an Amazon Celebrity Pick. Her consulting expertise and inspirational messages have benefited Fortune 500 companies such as ViacomCBS, Xerox, and iHeartMedia.
Born in Canton, Ohio, Corey Minor Smith earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and her Juris Doctorate from The University of Toledo. Her legal career, spanning over 23 years, has been dedicated to public service, including roles as an Assistant Prosecutor, Judicial Attorney, and Mayoral cabinet member, before serving as General Counsel for the same public housing authority that once provided housing for her family. She made history as the first African American elected to a city-wide position in Canton, receiving the most votes among six candidates to serve as an at-large member of the Canton City Council. After serving as a Presidential appointee in the Biden-Harris Administration as Senior Counsel for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Corey now holds the position of General Counsel for Pratum Companies, a national real estate brand.
Corey has received numerous accolades, including the NAACP - Stark County Image Award, NAMI-Stark County Starfish Award, Boy Scouts of America Buckeye Council Spirit of Scouting Award, She Elevates Woman of Courage Award, induction into the YWCA Women’s Hall of Fame, and recognition as an ATHENA International Women’s Leadership Finalist. In addition to her philanthropic efforts and active involvement in various organizations, Corey is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and resides in Washington, DC.
