About this event

  • 5 days 1 hour

This course is the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse (BRC1). The BRC1 is a group lesson motorcycle safety training course. More information about the BRC1 is on the BRC1 page of our website. https://theridingacademyofnj.org/beginner-brc1-1

As stated on the BRC1 page of our website, there are four modules (parts) to this course.

Module 1 - you take a 5-hour (average time) Pre-Course Assignment called the MSF eCourse , on your own, at your own pace, which familiarizes you with the basic physical & non-physical motorcycle riding skills. This module should be completed before Module 3 and must be completed before Module 4 - the riding sessions. More details about the MSF eCourse are on the BRC1 page of our website.

Module 2 - you take a 1-hour Supplemental eCourse that covers the controls of a motorcycle and the basic riding skills in more detail. More details about the Supplemental eCourse are on the BRC1 page of our website. This module should also be completed before Module 3 and must also be completed before Module 4 - the riding sessions.

Module 3 - you attend a 4-hour live remote/virtual classroom session, which you do at your location (your home, your office, etc.), that covers the non-physical skills needed to be a safe rider and a variety of crash avoiding techniques and concepts. More details about the online classroom session are on the BRC1 page of our website.

Module 4 - you attend approximately 10 hours of practice riding conducted over the course of two consecutive days for 5 hours per day. (You must take both riding sessions and the riding sessions must be taken on the two consecutive days for the class. You can't do one riding session on one day of the class and the other riding session on another day of another class unless you pay the full course price for both classes). More details about the riding sessions are on the BRC1 page of our website.

Do Module 1, the MSF eCourse, as soon as you can, on your own, at your own pace, preferably 30 days before Module 3, which is the live remote/virtual classroom session. This module should be completed before Module 3 and must be completed before Module 4 - the riding sessions. The link to the MSF eCourse will be in the Registration Confirmation email/tickets you will receive from Eventbrite as soon as you register for this course. (Item #3 under "Additional Information").

Do Module 2, the Supplemental eCourse, a few days before Module 3. This module should also be completed before Module 3 and must also be completed before Module 4 - the riding sessions. The link to the Supplemental eCourse will be sent in an email four days before the scheduled date for Module 3 from The Riding Academy of NJ.

Module 3, the live remote/virtual classroom session, is Tuesday night on the date posted for this course from 6:00 pm-10:00 pm. The link to the classroom session will be sent in an email four days before the scheduled date of this Module from The Riding Academy of NJ along with the link to the Supplemental eCourse and the link to all the forms needed for the classroom session. THIS CLASSROOM SESSION IS ONLINE DONE AT YOUR LOCATION (YOUR HOME, YOUR OFFICE, ETC.).

FAQs

Is there a minimum age requirement to take the BRC1?

Yes. The minimum age to take the course is 17 and you must have a NJ Driver License. If you are 17, a parent or guardian must sign the Waiver for Minors section on each of the two Indemnity Waivers on the first day of the riding sessions. More details about what is needed to take the BRC1 are on the BRC1 page of our website.

What do I need for the Tuesday night live remote/virtual classroom session (Module 3)?

For this Module, which is done at your location (your home, your office, etc.), have a pen or pencil handy. As stated above, we will send you an email four days before the scheduled date of Module 3 that contains the link to the live remote/virtual classroom session, the link to Module 2 and a link to download the handouts/forms needed for the classroom session.

What if I don't have all the proper riding gear/clothing for both riding sessions?

You will be sent home with a partial refund (as stated in our Refund Policy) and you'll have to register for another course at the full course price. What to wear for the riding sessions is posted on the BRC1 page of our website.

What if it rains on the days of the practice riding sessions?

The class is held rain or shine. Bring rain gear to keep you dry (rain jacket, rain pants, waterproof shoes, waterproof gloves or wear latex gloves under your gloves) to keep you dry. If we see you shivering (a sign of hypothermia), you will be sent home with a partial refund (as stated in our Refund Policy) and you'll have to register for another course at the full course price. You start to lose control of your body if you have hypothermia.

What if I arrive late for a riding session?

If you arrive after the Start Time for the course, you will be sent home with a partial refund (as stated in our Refund Policy) and you'll have to register for another course at the full course price. We start each riding session on time by reading safety rules that you can't miss for liability reasons.

What is your Refund Policy?

Here's our Refund Policy, which is posted on the Refunds page on our website under "Policies" and which you will acknowledge that you read when registering for the course. It will also be in the confirmation email.

* Counseled Out

We reserve the right to counsel out (remove) a student from a class if they are not able to ride a bicycle, are struggling while riding a practice riding exercise, are not able to keep up with the riding pace of the class, didn't meet the objective of a riding exercise within the time frame allotted for the exercise, are a safety hazard to themselves or others in the class, or display signs or symptoms of not feeling well (including, but not limited to, anxious, nervous, fatigue, nausea, lightheaded, dizzy, weak, faint, shivering, numbness in the fingers or toes, hypothermia, hyperthermia, heat exhaustion, heat stroke). If you are counseled out of class for any of these reasons, we will give you a partial refund as stated above in paragraph 1 under "Refunds". If you want to attend another class, you can register online for another class and pay the full course price again.

**All refunds will be issued after signing The Riding Academy of NJ's (RANJ) Counsel Out Form.

If you had trouble coordinating the clutch and the throttle in the BRC1, you can take the Introductory Motorcycle Experience (IME) for an additional price, which is a private one-on-one lesson for approximately 1-1 1/2 hours to practice coordinating the clutch & throttle. More information about the IME is on the IME page of our website. After successfully completing the IME, you can retake the course at the full course price if you still want to get a motorcycle license.

If you had trouble with the basic riding skills in the BRC1, you can take a Formal Remedial Training (FRT) session for $99, which is a private one-on-one lesson for approximately 2 hours to help you develop the basic riding skills and become more comfortable riding a motorcycle. After successfully completing the FRT, you can retake the course at the full course price if you still want to get a motorcycle license.

The riding sessions of the BRC1 are structured as group training. 12 students is the maximum number of students permitted per class. Due to the group training structure and the time frame of the riding exercises, we can't provide too much personal coaching. Personal coaching can only be provided in an IME, an FRT or a private APBRC. More information about the APBRC is on the APBRC page of our website.

Strict Policy

Our Refund Policy is very strict because we do not want to lose money on a class. Since we offer more benefits and features than all the other motorcycle safety training schools in NJ, we run on a very small profit margin and cannot afford to lose money. If you miss a class, can't make a class, or arrive late to attend a class, we can't just put you in another class for free. That's like buying two seats (one seat in each class) for the price of one seat.

If you have tickets to a sports game or concert and can't make the event for whatever reason, you don't get to go to another game or concert for free.

We lose money on last minute cancellation/rescheduling requests because we lose the ability to sell that seat to someone else on such short notice, and we lose money on the class.

We are very strict on having the proper riding gear for the riding sessions (the proper riding gear is posted on the BRC1 page of our website) and arriving on time for the riding sessions because you can't miss any safety information once a riding session starts for liability reasons.
