About this event

  • 45 minutes

Braving the River by Juana Parral is about two lands divided by a river. There is the Land of the Loud where we meet Sumit, a 9-year-old girl who wants to save her land but finds herself scared of the world around her. There is the Land of the Quiet where we meet Bodie, a 9-year-old boy, who wants nothing more than to escape the land of the quiet and face his fears. Filled with songs, interactive sensory materials for each audience member to experience the story as it is happening, and lots of magic, this new show is truly for the whole family.

Each family will receive a box full of magical sensory props that will help to tell the story of the show!

Everyone registered will receive a social story for the performance with more information about the show and ways to prep your family, along with the video of the cast introducing themselves prior to the performance! This email will also include an optional survey for any accessibility needs for our team to know.

We have a Q & A below for common questions. However, if you have specific questions and/or accessibility needs, please email sarahgordin@phillychildrenstheatre.org.

Frequently asked questions

What if my child I am with needs to leave during the show?

That is 100% okay! We will have a quiet area separate from the performance with sensory toys for people to take a break, as needed. They are welcome to rejoin whenever they are ready! Our goal with this show is to create an environment for all children to be welcome at the theatre!

What makes this show different from sensory days at theatres/museums?

Great question! This show has been created specifically for children with disabilities as opposed to taking a show and working to make it accessible. What we are doing: social stories, lights up the whole time, sound control with the play, sensory objects to touch, and immersive elements.

Why is it only one ticket per family?

We are limiting the audience to one ticket per family (meaning that one ticket will admit a whole family who attends) so that we are able to provide the most immersive and controlled setting possible.

How can we support this type of work?

Donating allows us to continue to put on these types of plays! If you are able, please donate. We have our tickets on a pay-what-you-can basis so that everyone is able to attend.

How can I prepare my child for the show?

We will be sending out social stories for the location that you sign up for with information about the play. We will also send out some more information about the plot of the play, as well as a video of the actors introducing themselves.

What if my child doesn't like a specific sensory element?

It is always an invitation to experience a sensory element, not something that is ever forced. Additionally, our actors will act as "guides" helping to take out the objects from the bags but will look to the grown-ups to know if the child would like to try a particular sensory experience.

Can my child make noise during the show?

Yes! They can make noise! There are times when they are invited to make noise and answer questions from the cast. There are times in the show where we may encourage the audience to be quiet, but noises are always welcome.
