Learn and Practice Skills to reduce the Polarization in Political and Controversial Conversations

First United Methodist Church Boerne has asked Braver Angels of Central Texas to conduct its "Depolarizing Within" workshop for its members and the entire surrounding community.

Braver Angels of Central Texas is the local chapter of Braver Angels, a national organization dedicated to reducing polarization in our political discourse.

In this interactive workshop, we'll assess our individual perspectives and biases and learn how to speak with others without stereotyping, dismissing, ridiculing or being contemptuous. We'll practice skills to intervene in polarizing conversations in ways that will keep us from being ostracized and we'll come away with tools to make conversations between differing viewpoints far more likely to be productive, successful, and sustainable.

The major goals of the workshop include teaching participants:

• How to be more aware of our own “inner polarizer”
• How to be critical without demonizing, dismissing or stereotyping large swaths of the population
• Strategies for intervening constructively in social conversations with like-minded peers when these conversations veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views.

Braver Angels began in December of 2016, shortly after the contentious Presidential election. Its mission is to depolarize America, and it does so with this belief: our love for our country can be shown by our concern for our fellow citizens, even when we disagree about politics. The foundation of Braver Angels is the Braver Angels Rule: at every level of leadership, from the national board of directors down to the organizers of local workshops, Braver Angels is half red and half blue. As individuals we try to understand the other side’s point of view, even if we don’t agree with it.
