Explore the technical and creative processes of making artists’ inks from botanical materials. Together, we will delve into historical and contemporary methods of making inks with plants responsibly foraged from the local environment. Collaborate in this process of ink making to learn about different seasonal plants that provide good sources of color for ink making, as well as various techniques for working with these inks.

Meet Your Teacher

Andrea Sherrill Evans (she/her) is an Arizona-born, Baltimore-based artist and educator whose artwork explores local ecosystems, seasonal cycles, and changing landscapes. As a means to interweave ideas and materiality, her drawings utilize handmade inks, charcoal, and paper created from flora foraged in her backyard and neighborhood, along trails and while traveling. Evans received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston / Tufts University and her BFA in Painting from Arizona State University. She is a recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award, the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in Drawing, and the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist Award, and her work has been exhibited at spaces throughout the US. In 2022, Evans undertook training to become a Maryland Master Naturalist, and her volunteer work focuses on expanding and supporting a native plant pollinator garden at Baltimore's Lake Roland with a group of fellow Master Naturalists.
