Bookbinding: Sewn Boards Binding

The Soapbox is a nonprofit community print shop, book and zine making center, and library of 3,500 rare handmade publications – one of only a few spaces in the country that combines zine, book arts, and poetry chapbook worlds in one location. Since 2011, we have been offering affordable workshops, equipment access, art exhibits, readings, a reading room, and edible printing events.

About this eventThe Sewn Boards Binding, developed by Gary Frost, is a modern version of one of the earliest forms of the codex. This structure has been used to rebind books as a library binding, as a limited-edition binding for new artist works, and as a simple blank book. The book opens flat and is a great structure for beginning bookbinders. Use it as a notebook or sketchbook, a gift, or a model for additional handmade books.About the InstructorErica Honson is an artist, educator, and collaborative printer in Philadelphia, PA. They teach printmaking and graphic design at Bucks County Community College. They also periodically teach workshops at Common Press, The Soapbox, The Free Library of Philadelphia, The Rosenbach Museum &amp; Library, and local colleges and universities in Philadelphia, and have facilitated a number of live printmaking activities in public spaces around Philadelphia.
