Book Binding Core Workshops I-IV (Summer 2025 Session)
w/Jane Freeman & Yolanda Merrill
Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, July 17– 20, 2025

This four-part Bookbinding Core Series prepares participants to undertake various projects and additional classes in intermediate and advanced bookbinding techniques and structures.

  • Class 1 introduces essential bookbinding tools, shop equipment, materials, and processes.
  • Class 2 employs the portfolio structure to develop skills in board cutting, working with cover materials, and using adhesives.
  • Class 3 starts with introducing the case-bound book, its history, and its mechanics.
Participants will learn how to sequence the making of this structure and will end the day with a fully finished case-bound book.
  • Class 4 is a continuation of class 3.
Participants will make a second case-bound book. They can decide on this book's size and cover material and can experiment with decorative paper brought from home.

Organized by

Virginia Humanities is the state humanities council. We’re headquartered in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia, but we serve the entire state.

We aim to share the stories of all Virginians—or, better yet, find ways for people to share their own stories. We want Virginians to connect with their history and culture and, in doing that, we hope we’ll all get to know each other a little better.
