Sunday 5 MAY at 2pm RIPLEY’S GAME (UK/Italy/USA 2002 110 mins) Dir: Liliana Cavani.

Published in 1974, Ripley's Game was written by Patricia Highsmith as the third entry in her series of books about the elusive con man Tom Ripley. The plot? To satisfy an old associate who wants a murder arranged, Ripley tricks a sickly picture framer to become an assassin.

Why involve an innocent man in a murder? Well, let's just say you should never insult Tom

Ripley at a party...

The novel resulted in two film adaptations including Wim Wenders’ neo-noir The American

Friend from the late-1970s with Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper as Ripley. For this edition of

Book-to-Film, we will be screening the second cinema adaptation, Ripley’s Game (2002)

starring Dougray Scott, Lena Headey, Ray Winstone and John Malkovich as Ripley. Produced

after the success of The Talented Mr Ripley, the film is an underrated comic thriller directed

by Italian filmmaker Liliana Cavani (The Night Porter) and featuring a score by Ennio

Morricone. This session will be hosted by Tristan Fidler and Michael O’Rourke with a

discussion after the screening.

Patricia Highsmith’s novel is available in paperback; also on Kindle and Audible.
