In this book reception, hosted by LASC-CU Boulder, authors Andrea Dyrness and Enrique Sepúlveda III will share perspectives on how Latinx youth experience belonging across borders.About the book: As anti-immigrant nationalist discourses escalate globally, Border Thinking offers critical insights into how young people in the Latinx diaspora experience belonging, make sense of racism, and long for change. Andrea Dyrness and Enrique Sepúlveda III ask not how to help the diaspora youth assimilate but what the United States and Europe can learn about citizenship from these diasporic youth. Winner of the Council on Anthropology and Education Outstanding Book Award 2020 (American Anthropological Association)&quot;Border Thinking offers critical insights into how Latinx youth speak back to racializing, colonial discourses that frame them as outsiders. It is theoretically sophisticated, engaging, and methodologically innovative, offering new insights into participatory methodologies—but its true contribution lies in how it reveals young people’s creative imaginings of transnational forms of citizenship and belonging that are too often silenced by integration initiatives focused on national assimilation.&quot;—Reva Jaffe-Walter, author of Coercive Concern: Nationalism, Liberalism, and the Schooling of Muslim Youth About the speakers: Clint Carroll (moderator): Clint Carroll is Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. He received his doctorate from the University of California Berkeley in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in Anthropology, with a minor in American Indian Studies. A citizen of the Cherokee Nation, he works closely with Cherokee people in Oklahoma on issues of land conservation and the perpetuation of land-based knowledge and ways of life. His book, Roots of Our Renewal: Ethnobotany and Cherokee Environmental Governance (2015, University of Minnesota Press), explores how tribal natural resource managers navigate the material and structural conditions of settler colonialism, as well as how recent efforts in cultural revitalization are informing such practices through traditional forms of decision-making and local environmental knowledge. Andrea Dyrness: Andrea Dyrness is an Associate Professor in Educational Foundations, Policy, and Practice, and a faculty affiliate in Anthropology at CU Boulder.She is an anthropologist of education whose areas of interest include education and citizenship in Latin America and transnational Latinx migrant communities in the U.S. and Spain. Her research investigates how young people growing up transnational communities, particularly in Latin American and Caribbean diasporas, learn to belong, participate and work for change in multiple national communities, and the spaces and practices that support their critical citizenship formation. Her new co-authored book, Border Thinking: Latinx Youth Decolonizing Citizenship (University of Minnesota Press, Spring 2020) explores the meaning of transnational experiences for Latinx youth in California, El Salvador, and Spain, and the implications for democratic citizenship. Dr. Dyrness is also the author of Mothers United: An Immigrant Struggle for Socially Just Education (Univ of Minnesota Press, 2011), and has published in Anthropology &amp; Education Quarterly, Harvard Educational Review, Journal of Diaspora, Indigenous and Minority Education, and other journals. She has been an Associate Editor for Anthropology &amp; Education Quarterly. Andrea taught from 2005-2017 at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and has held fellowships and appointments in El Salvador (1998-99 and 2008-09), Spain (2013-14), and Denmark (2014).Enrique Sepúlveda: Enrique Sepúlveda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at CU Boulder. I am the son of Mexican migrant workers from the Texas/Mexican border and in my early career I worked as a bilingual classroom teacher and school principal in the northern California central valley. These experiences have shaped my lens and motivations to interrogate, examine and dismantle dominant structures, narratives and practices around culture, race and language that serve to marginalize and keep people from realizing their full humanity. I have centered my research projects in Latinx communities and schools heavily impacted by global migration in northern California, San Salvador, El Salvador, and Madrid, Spain. My research examines how Latinx peoples, youth and their families, negotiate from the bottom up global migration, citizenship, belonging and complex identity formation processes in the context of severe inequality and structural constraints within sending and receiving contexts of transnational migration circuits. My work seeks to understand and develop methodologies and pedagogies that facilitate a deeper understanding of the complex, liminal lives of migrant youth and community.
