ABOUT THE BOOK

The Last Heath Hen is a true story about a species of birds with extraordinary behaviors that vanished on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Efforts to save it are considered among the earliest species conservation projects. Officials think it may be the only instance of the documentation in North America of the last individual in the wild. A lengthy and concerted effort to save the heath hen was made by organizations, institutions, and individuals responsible for conservation. Why did they fail? In this story children can understand how complicated conservation is, even on a small island.
