<a href="https://sva.edu/academics/undergraduate/bfa-visual-and-critical-studies" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">BFA Visual &amp; Critical Studies</a> is pleased to host the opening reception of “Body Transfer,” an exhibition of photographs and paintings by Ariane Lopez-Huici and Mary Jones. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, June 2 from 5-7 PM in the Flatiron Project Space, the ground floor of 133 W 21st Street.“Body Transfer” explores the body as a site for transformation, where identities shift, and narratives are invented. In the collaborative work of Ariane Lopez-Huici and Mary Jones, images of models from the photographs of Lopez-Huici are transferred into the oil paintings of Jones–within this new frame of reference, interpretations expand and new associations begin. This transition from artist to artist changes the context and the character of the model’s image and becomes an example of the slippage of interpretation. Beginning with conversations and studio visits, the photographer and painter discovered they have something in common: an approach to the body as a site of cultural projection and duress, from the pressures of conformity, to the invasiveness of scientific surveillance and examination.The photographs of Lopez-Huici celebrate the beauty of unusual individuals who exist beyond the cultural norm. Jones is an abstract painter who incorporates X-ray prints of body parts into suggestive gestural grounds. The intimacy of the photography sessions of Lopez-Huici allows the models full agency for self-expression. Relocated into the oil paintings of Jones, a reaction and retelling of the information and images from Lopez- Huici is created. The models are now in the fictional world of abstraction, a new space of imagination and psychological associations. This also expands the trust between the model and Lopez-Huici to now include Jones. The circle widens.------------------------For on-campus events, SVA requires all guests to provide proof of vaccination and booster; without proof of vaccination and booster you will not be able to enter SVA buildings. Visitors should bring their Eventbrite registration with them to the event. Everyone must remain masked, except where otherwise noted.

The Flatiron Project Space, created and founded by the<a href="https://sva.edu/academics/undergraduate/bfa-visual-and-critical-studies" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> BFA Visual &amp; Critical Studies department</a>, is located on the ground floor of 133 West 21 Street. The gallery invites VCS students and guest curators, along with other departments at SVA, to realize curatorial projects that highlight our rapidly expanding visual culture. Shows are held monthly and include video, performance, painting and sculptural projects.The gallery is open Monday through Sunday, 9 AM to 6 PM. It is fully accessible by wheelchair.
