BODY HIGH is a femme-, trans-, and GNC-centered space where everyone can, and are encouraged to move and dance as loudly and however they feel called to — while feeling safe and celebrated, and while honoring the history of the Black and queer roots of house and club music (see &quot;background&quot; below).COME EARLY — there will be a special screening of a short film that&#x27;s featuring a number of contributions from community members right before the beginning of the first set (starting at 6pm). RSVPing purely just helps me (organizer, Varsha) with getting a better idea of number of attendees. Tickets are a suggested dontion of $10-$25, cash, venmo, or cashapp at the door. Ofc, no one turned away for lack of funds. Thank you :) Background House music and the electronic genres that followed are originally Black and queer. It was pioneering Black and queer producers and DJs that spawned and made space for many new club scenes for dance music and subcultures such as the Ballroom scene, as early as the late 70s. Freestyle dance forms like voguing, house, and breakdancing were common sights at house music clubs, and also existed in club scenes in the Bay Area throughout the 90s and early 2000s. Since then, the scope and popularity of electronic music has exploded tremendously, but the culture has shifted to where you no longer see people dancing the styles that formed in these original club spaces (beyond Ballroom events and dance studios), and much of the history of Black artists — dancers, producers, and DJs — is forgotten or overlooked. Additionally, mainstream clubs are not typically safe spaces for many femme and queer identifying individuals where they can take up space and dance freely without risking harassment or inappropriate unwanted attention. Being rooted in this history, BODY HIGH aims to positively shift the current club culture by reconnecting the Bay&#x27;s incredible talent of house &amp; club music DJs with dancers and people who love to move – reclaiming the club as a space where music can be enjoyed viscerally and spiritually.
