Sessions are every Tuesday in October from 5:30pm-8:00pm. (10/5, 10/12, 10/19 and 10/26)WHY IS THIS PROGRAM IMPORTANT?Building a board of engaged volunteer leaders is critical for nonprofit organizations. And great boards are composed of individuals who understand – and embrace – their roles and responsibilities.As nonprofit boards diversify with a new generation and a broader representation of the people they serve, and as corporations encourage community leadership experiences for promising employees, we are presented fresh opportunities to reach and equip more rising leaders with the tools they need.WHAT IS THE PROGRAM?The One Valley Community Foundation is excited to bring back this four-part series that offers an overview of the learning, commitment, fiduciary and governance responsibilities of board service. This small cohort series will have only 24 participants, which will allow for more intimate discussions on challenges and opportunities board members face in their leadership roles.WHAT IS INCLUDED IN MY REGISTRATION?Dinner, drinks, materials and course presentations are included in your registration fee for four sessions. Participants are expected to join each session in the month of October. Registration closes September 30th so register soon!WHAT ARE THE SESSIONS?#1. Tuesday, October 5th // Board Member 101: What is the role of the board? Led by Jenn Lammers, Owner of The Philanthropy Hub and Lecturer at Northeastern UniversityBoard members often struggle with understanding their important volunteer role. In our first session, we will explore the board member’s role and the expectations the community and the law placed on nonprofit board members. We will discuss how you carry out the Duty of Care, Duty of Obedience and Duty of Loyalty as an effective board member.#2. Tuesday, October 12th // Understanding Nonprofit Finances and Financial Responsibilities- Led by Brea Bauer, CPA and Senior Manager at Anderson ZurMuhlen &amp; Co.In this session, participants will gain a greater familiarity with nonprofit financials and feel empowered to better monitor the financial health of their organization. We will discuss types of financial reports, best practices and the board’s financial roles and responsibilities.#3. Tuesday, October 19th // Guide to Nonprofit Board Fundraising: What is the role of the board and individual board members in fundraising? Led by Jason Smith, Chief Advancement Officer at Bozeman Health FoundationFundraising can be one of the most intimidating aspects of board service. During this session, we will explore the role of fundraising as a board member and strategies to be more successful in resource development for the cause you care about most.#4. Tuesday, October 26th // Assessing Board Performance: How to measure your success! Led by Jason Smith, Chief Advancement Officer at Bozeman Health FoundationFor boards to be able to move their organization forward, they need to assess and reflect on their own performances individually and collectively and the performance of top management. Assessing board performance gives the board a chance to step away from other duties and reflect on how well they are doing relative to strategic planning, overseeing the organization and its needs, and where they can improve individually. In this session, we will discuss best practices in board and director assessment.Safety Precautions: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, One Valley will follow CDC guidelines for our programming to do our part to help keep our community safe and healthy. We ask all participants to agree to the following safety precautions when joining us:<ul><li>All participants must wear a mask at all times, regardless of vaccination status, unless they are actively eating or drinking.</li><li>Masks must be worn over both your mouth and nose.</li><li>If you are feeling sick at all, please do not attend.</li><li>Registration is mandatory and will be limited to 24 participants to ensure space for social distancing.</li><li>We reserve the right to transition this to a virtual training if necessary.</li></ul>Scholarships:Scholarships are available for up to 50% of the program cost.
