Blued Trees, an opera that merges the tragic human face of ecocide, generational conflict; the people and their crucial decisions. Gary, a pipeline executive, is being charged for ecocide for his company’s destruction of the forest. His daughter opposes him. In the crossfire, his loyal wife finds herself uncertain. Yet he is relentless in his vision of his business success. Gary’s company destroyed a forest which was part of an artist’s installation. The artwork was protected by a 1990 Federal statute (VARA). It granted moral rights of ownership. His corporation did not have the right to destroy the eco artwork, just because they owned the land the art was on. Gary’s wife surprises him, it seems that she is somehow starting to disappear. Or is he imagining this? His daughter, an obstetrician brings new life onto the earth: “When they take their first breath, I can’t breathe,” she tells her father. Gary has no idea that he doesn’t know his daughter.
