TuYo Theatre presents the San Diego premiere of Blue Marigold, a haunting, visually electrifying play about grief, power, and belonging.
Blue Marigold by Mabelle Reynoso is a vivid, magical-realist journey that follows a lonely Mexican-American teenager, Sammy Flores, who discovers that the father she has never known is from Mictlān—the Mexica Land of the Dead—and that she has mysterious powers tied to grief. When tragedy strikes, Sammy is pulled between two worlds: a nine-level underworld where she feels seen, and the living world where her people are fighting against poverty, gentrification, and environmental injustice.
Blending Día de Muertos traditions, activism, and the daily struggles of being a teenager, Blue Marigold is a play for multigenerational audiences that explores grief, the cost of resistance, and what it means to find—and fight for—your people and your future.
Blue Marigold was commissioned as part of the BIPOC Superhero Project, a nationwide initiative to use theatre to explore the notion of superheroes while, at the same time, exploring the issues that are our youth communities of color are encountering and struggling with.
