Summary: Blockchains sequentially record the history of transactions between peers in distributed ledgers, namely append-only lists replicated on the nodes that compose the network. Second-generation blockchains such as Ethereum come endowed with the opportunity to encode smart contracts, thus making it a programmable environment. Therefore, they allow for the controlled enactment of multi-party processes as well as the immutable recording of their distributed execution. This talk revolves around the current state of the art, as well as the opportunities and challenges that arise when it comes to conducting process automation and analysis on blockchains.Biography: Claudio Di Ciccio is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the Sapienza University of Rome. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna, Austria). He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering in 2013 at Sapienza. His research interests include Process Mining, Blockchains, and Logic in AI.He has co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications in major outlets in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, and related disciplines. He received the best paper award at BPM 2015, the best presentation award at ZEUS 2016, and the best user paper award at ECIR 2019. In 2018, he was nominated Researcher of the Month of the WU Vienna.Claudio Di Ciccio is a member of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining. He has been appointed Program Committee Chair of the International Conference on Process Mining in 2021, of the International Conference on Business Process Management in 2022, and of the BPM Blockchain Forum in 2019. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Melbourne and the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, and the Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands.
