Block Printing Workshop

Block Printing Workshop

Overview

A full day printmaking workshop where you'll learn to carve your own stamps and design colorful patterns with Susana McDonnell.

In this introductory printmaking workshop, Susana will demonstrate some basic carving and block printing techniques and introduce us to all of the fun materials. Each person will then be able to hard-carve their own blocks into a soft rubber matrix. In the first part of the workshop, we will create a set of 6-8 postcards using stamps that we make.

After the lunch break, you'll be able to create a larger piece on paper. Susana will teach us how to mix and match shapes and layer different colors to create your own beautiful design.

This workshop is beginner-friendly, and also a great follow-up if you have attended one of our introductory block making workshops before.

Your ticket includes:

  • All supplies needed for the workshop
  • A set of 4 blank postcards and envelopes to print on and take home with you
  • Individualized instruction from local artist Susana McDonnell
  • Soft drinks, tea, and snacks. (Please bring your own lunch, or you can get take-out from one of our neighboring restaurants.)

Space is very limited to ensure that each participant gets one-on-one support from Susana. Advance registration required.

About your Instructor: Susana McDonnell is the owner of LinoCave, a home studio based in Newton, focused on geometric pattern design and block printing on fabric and paper. She holds a BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and is a lifelong artist who has studied and taught many mediums including, but not limited to glassblowing, neon, wood, drawing, and watercolor. Despite the fact that block printing is one of the few mediums she has not formally studied, the allure of it inspires her to teach and explore it further every day. Susana draws her inspiration from a curiosity of the interaction of color, shape, line, and form when overlapped and combined. Some of the hand-carved stamps she uses are as small as one inch square and larger works can have thousands of hand-pressed impressions. She is the co-host of @printersolstice, a prompt-based printmaking campaign on Instagram that inspires printmakers around the world to create during the winter solstice and is also a Demo Artist for the historic Speedball Art Products company.

In the event that a workshop is canceled due to instructor illness, inclement weather, or low enrollment, we will notify all participants via email as soon as possible and issue a full refund.
