ABOUT BLACK PHILANTHROPY MONTH

This year’s theme, "Black Love in Action,” is inspired by the times and writings of the late scholar-activist, bell hooks, who spoke about love as a necessary foundation for true social change. Love for all humanity is also the root meaning of philanthropy. In the context of Black giving, we recognize the power of Black self-love as an act of universal human rights that promotes racial, social, economic, gender, and environmental justice.

Black Philanthropy Month is a global celebration launched by Dr. Jackie Bovier Copeland in August 2011. Since 2019, the Community Foundation has hosted a local celebration as part of its Giving Black RVA initiative to inform, involve, inspire and invest in Black philanthropic leadership and to strengthen African American and African-descent giving in all its forms. In these hopeful, but crisis times, it is important to recognize Black philanthropy is more than money, but also creative philanthropy, business investment, and racial equity advocacy on behalf of our communities here at home and across the world.
