Overview

Whether you use a mobility aid or prefer a slower pace, this birding hike is built to meet you where you are.

Bird observation is one of the most accessible ways that we can experience nature and wildlife. During this event, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about bird habitat on the universally accessible trail at Mill Creek Falls Nature Preserve. This trail welcomes folks with mobility challenges and offers chances to see a variety of birds including woodpeckers, songbirds and raptors that fly along the Susquehanna River. We will review birding basics, with binoculars available for those who would like to use them, and help with basic identification of common birds along the way.

What to Expect and How to Prepare: The lollipop-shaped trail travels along the top of a heavily forested ridge. It has little elevation change and is about a mile in total. This crushed stone trail is universally accessible so all visitors, including those with strollers, wheelchairs, or other mobility devices, are able to experience the preserve. We will move at a pace that is comfortable for all participants and maximizes bird observation.

There is an accessible port-a-john available on site. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring water to drink, any snacks you may need, and pertinent personal first aid.

This event is recommended for ages 10 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).

Event Leader: Sarah Gotwols, Interpretive Ranger with Lancaster Conservancy and resident bird nerd, is a Lancaster County native who has spent countless hours observing birds in their natural habitat along the Susquehanna River.
