<h2>Speaker Bios</h2>Derrick Brent is the Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, and Deputy Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In these roles he serves as the principal advisor to Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO, managing a wide portfolio of programs and operations. Deputy Director Brent’s career includes vast public service and private sector work, including significant experience in IP law and work to assist startups, as well as those who are underrepresented. He served for six years as Chief Counsel for Senator Barbara Boxer, where he was responsible for a broad portfolio that included IP and constitutional issues, civil rights, telecommunications, and judicial nominations. Deputy Director Brent has served in the private sector as Vice President/Associate General Counsel for the multinational medical technology company Masimo. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Deputy Director Brent worked for General Motors as an engineer with the Powertrain Division. Deputy Director Brent received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from The Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern University School of Law (now the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law)Rick Hamilton is Chief Technology Officer at the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, where he works to improve patient outcomes by accelerating the use of advanced therapeutic techniques. Formerly the most prolific inventor in IBM's history, he is a named inventor on 1,048 issued US patents, placing him fifteenth on the list of most prolific inventors in world history--just behind Thomas Edison. Rick has spoken on machine learning, cloud computing, internet-of-things, innovation, and intellectual property management in 32 countries, and has trained thousands of people on best invention practices. Before joining the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, he developed the UnitedHealth Group Invention Program, positioning the company on an innovative footing to compete with technology giants. Rick holds a BS from the University of Tennessee, and graduate degrees from Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas. Dr. Marc Hedrick is the President and CEO at PLUS THERAPEUTICS, Inc., a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company developing innovative, targeted radiotherapeutics for adults and children with rare and difficult-to-treat cancers.Previously, Dr. Hedrick served in a number of executive leadership roles including President, CEO, and Director at Cytori Therapeutics, Inc., and President and CEO of StemSource, Inc. Dr. Hedrick is a trained general, vascular, and plastic surgeon and former Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Hedrick also served as Co-Director of the Laboratory of Regenerative Bioengineering and Repair at UCLA. Dr. Hedrick obtained his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas and a MBA from The Anderson School at UCLA in 2005.
