Biocene Tools Workshop 2019

PeTaL (Periodic Table of Life) is intended to be a design tool to enable systematic design of nature-inspired systems. This requires vast quantities and high quality data, images, videos, publications and other forms of input. A large user base is also needed to obtain feedback and to ensure the value of PeTaL to various user demographics and design philosophies. V.I.N.E. (Virtual Interchange for Nature-inspired Exploration) was created to meet the aforementioned requirements for PeTaL on August 2, 2016, by establishing a convergence of practitioners, disciplines, bio-inspired philosophy, tools and research.One of the primary challenges to systems such as PeTaL is access to large volumes of curated data. To address this challenge, institutions such as museums, zoos and aquariums should cooperate to create workflows and standards that benefit research and application. NASA’s Glenn Research Center created V.I.N.E. (Virtual Interchange for Nature-inspired Exploration) in August 2016 as an online global community to pioneer nature-inspired pathways for the benefit of all. NASA V.I.N.E. was established to encourage collaborations between academia, industry, government and citizen scientists around the central theme of physiomimetics. The intention is to encourage academic researchers to contribute data to PeTaL, government organizations to fund fundamental research to generate data and industry to apply solutions and share designs. Membership in the group is voluntary and open to all. The group is composed of ‘clusters’ (shown in Table 2) of technology areas led by a volunteer from any organization.

We invite participants from academia, industry and government who currently use bio-inspired design (BID), wish to infuse bio-inspiration into their organizations or practitioners of AI, machine learning or data science to participate in the Biocene Tools Workshop 2019 with the objectives of <ul><li>Understanding the landscape of biomimicry - challenges and resources available</li><li>Developing contacts and collaborators</li><li>Gaining an understanding of the vision and a sense of belonging</li><li>Developing a roadmap for the integration of biomimetic tools</li><li>Formulating goals to work toward for Biocene 2020</li></ul>Some topics explored in the workshop include:— BID tools: Use cases and case studies— Key Perspectives— Designer aids / design tools— Interface designs— Repositories— AI/Data Mining— Cognitive tools / aids— MindmapsThe event includes icebreakers where participants can get acquainted with one another and their work.
