Who Should Attend
Are you an AI professional? This is a hands-on workshop, aimed at anyone who works in AI and who has responsibility for approving, developing and maintaining systems with “AI inside”, with a particular focus on data-driven decision support. The workshop could also interest anyone wanting to understand how to manage bias throughout the AI system life cycle.

Session Overview
A one-hour hands-on workshop for to 20 people. The session will start with an introduction to the language and process of IEEE Std 7003-2024 Algorithmic Bias Considerations, followed by an opportunity to explore how to use the bias profile tool to think through the use and management of bias in your own use-case.

About the Speaker

Dr Julian Padget, Associate Professor in Computer Science, has been researching in AI since the late 1980s working his way through expert systems and multiagent system to applications of machine learning. He is particularly concerned about the role of AI in safety-critical systems where bias is both essential to system function but also a latent bug. He works with Hexology, brevio and Etiq.ai in the commercial sector and contributes to standards making at the British Standards Institute (BSI), the International Standards Organization (ISO), the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

About the Bath Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour
www.idsb.ac.uk

The University of Bath has one of the UK's most successful applied digital behaviour and security research groups. The Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour (IDSB) is a research institute which brings over 50 academic researchers together. We are experts in behavioural, economic, data and social science who take a “whole of society” approach to understanding challenges and opportunities associated with digital technologies.

Our research is organised around five themes:

  1. online safety and harms
  2. global politics of security and technology
  3. emerging and future technologies
  4. human, economic and organisational aspects of cyber security
  5. digital data and national security

The IDSB leverages and combines Bath's unique expertise and resources, including a dedicated lab and novel online simulation environments, to create a single front door for interdisciplinary academic research and collaboration with government and industry. Through doing so we hope to help make the UK a more innovative, safe and resilient digital society, to develop the next generation of experts in digital security and behaviour and to advance the UK as a global leader in this domain.

What can we do for you?

  • Help identify relevant academic expertise
  • Provide rapid response to emerging priorities relevant to national security
  • Synthesize academic knowledge into actionable insights
  • Co-create longer-term research projects based on real-world challenges
